  • Mac VE sample rate

I run VE as a plugin with MAc/Digital Performer and, as I deliver in 48K, I record at this rate. I have noticed that my VE plugin seems to default, as it loads into Digital Performer, to 44.1 and I get random crackling when attempting to record. The stand-alone can be set at 48K, but I am not sure if the plugin follows the host sequencer sample rate. I cannot check once VE is in use because VE will not allow preference changes in use. Question: does anyone know if VE is written to slave to the host sequencer sample rate?

  • change of sample rate (re-sampling) is up to the host or audio device

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • I can confirm this behaviour: the project sample rate in DP 5.13 on the master computer is 48 kHz, and the VE spawned at the slave runs at 44.1 kHz. Occasional glitches and crackles.

So the VE service on a slave runs always at 44.1 kHz, regardless of the sample rate of the main DAW, right? If the project sample rate on the main DAW is different, it is up to the main DAW to resample.

Too bad, since my slave (MacBook Pro) has plenty of CPU power left, while my main DAW (an old G5) hasn't. So the only solution would be to run the main project at 44.1 kHz.

By the way, I've never understood why the Vienna Instruments are sampled at 44.1 kHz... I guess that at least 90% of the VSL users are film music composers who have always to work with 48 kHz.

    Cheers

  • Have you tried to set the sample rate in AudioMIDI-Config to 48 kHz? All the new Macs can do that, maybe VE will listen to that one. (I know that it is not supposed to sync with the audio I/O - but maybe worth a try). Maybe it is a good idea to contact them by email (support@...) and give details about your setup and the steps you take. Seems that some companies are a but picky such forum communication. Per email you might provide more specific information which may help them to reproduce this. best

Hello Christian, So, does this mean that VE will NOT play back at 48K? Am I then to assume that I have to do all of my files at 44.1 and change them to 48K for submission??

Hello Pierre> Thanks for the confirmation. It would seem that from what Christian said, VE is ALWAYS at a 44.1 sample rate. That is frustrating, because I have been getting so many clicks and pops that I have gone back to using my Gigastudio version. I guess I'll have to switch to 44.1....not ideal. Charles

Hello Steff3, Thanks, but I already have the configuration on AudioMidi set to 48K, as well as the MOTU 2408 driver and Digital Performer. VE still shows itself as 44.1 and the clicks are still there. I'll take your advice and send a letter to support. Best, Charles

if you visualize the nature of sampling it gets clear why ... sample content is in 44.1 kHz 24 bit stereo ... just the right format for CD/mp3/ect ...

of course the VI engine could provide re-sampling but the question is why, because every host already provides such a feture ... quality and efficiency might differ though ...

Yes, but not the right format for film/TV delivery. I can always dumb down for CD and worse of all, MP3. I use Digital Performer which is a major sequencer.
