  • VE3 8GB Slave runs smoothly!!! - Will 16GB work??? (No Server)

    Hi Vienna-Guys,

I´m about to build a 16GB PC Slave. So, sorry to ask this again:

I have a PC running VE3 (Network) just fine with these components:

     CPU Core2 Quad Q6600 (4 x 2.5)

     Board GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P

     RAM OCZ DDR2-800 CL5 8GB

     Graphics ASUS EN7200GS

     Sound HD Western Digital 1.0TB

     Network on board

     OS: XP64

If I build a 16GB Slave with the following Components:

     CPU Core2 Quad Q6600 (4 x 2.5)

     Board Asus P5QL ATX

     Cooler Thermaltake Golden Orb

RAM 16 GB Quad Kit (400 MHz DDR2-800)

     Netzteil Xilence Power 500 Watt

     Grafikkarte GeForce 9400 GT

System HD Seagate Barracuda 80 GB SATA II

Sound HD Hitachi 7K100 750 GB SATA II

Network Digitus 1000Base TX 1GBit PCI

     OS XP 64

Is there a chance it works???

     The reason I´m asking:

My PC-Dealer refused to build me a 16GB PC for this task unless it is a server (much more expensive)

He would only guarantee function up to 8GB. With Intel Motherbords (Works)

Is it a big risk to go for 16GB anyway? Have you tested it meanwhile?

Anybody? Have you experienced Problems above 8GB?

Is it saver to buy 2X 8GB PC´s?

Thank you for respons asap. Cheers from Hamburg

     Oliver

P.S. Hey Christian, thanks for the inspiring workshop in Cologne last week!

  • looks quite well so far ... i don't see a reason why it wouldn't work reliably with 16 GB

    a few comments though:

double check power consumption of all components under full load and consider you might add another harddisk later ...

my feeling says you should be fine with the 500 Watt ....

trade the digitus gigabit NIC for a IntelPro 1000 PCIe or stay with the onboard one

the Q6600 is 2.4 GHz AFAIK and has FSB 1066 (themal design power 95 W)

so consider using also 1066 DDR-2 memory

strictly stay with memory specified to be compatible by the motherboard vendor

or visit kingston's website to see their compatibility list (RAM with motherboard)

ps: we didn't upgrade our P5x board to 16 GB so far and intel boards are also my favourites currently, but finally all of them are made at the same factory in taiwan ....

  • Christian, on the subject of Kingston memory, are there any known performance issues with their Mac Pro modules. I can order 8GB for under £170 from a webshop which is quite a bit cheaper than the likes of Crucial.

    Colin

  • unfortunately i can't comment on that since we get our macPro sticks from our apple dealer - kingston offers warranty for them though ...

  • Cheers Christian.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       VSL must have loads of money if they can afford to get their memory from Apple!  Anyone else out there using Kingston in their MacPro?

  • Oliver, I have a few thoughts about running 16GB.

    1. You may have to disable the paging file. On my system loading becomes very sloooooooooooooooooooooow at around 7-8GB
    2. You may run out of GUI resources, as there is a limit to the number of Instruments you can run. Even though I have 32GB I've had to delete some Instruments from my original template.
    3. If you stuff each instrument too fully, you will find that loading slows down yet again.

    DG

  • note: i did not say we purchase it from apple ... we generally prefer to purchase apple stuff from our favourite apple dealer since everything is thoroughly tested and under warranty ... well, maybe we add audio cards and harddisks from time to time, but if then always high quality

  • Chrisitian and DG, thank you so much for quick answers and thoughts! DG, what (where) is a paging file? (I´m a Mac-User,sorry) Christian, can you comment on DG´s warning that GUI resources run short above 8GB, and is there a Limit to Instrument Load? Will loading slow down above 8GB? IF so, is it worth then going above 8GB? Best Oliver

  • using a pagefile on computers for sample playing is useless (we don't want sample preload buffers to be paged out in virtual memory) so i'm tending to drastically reduce the size of the pagefile or even disable usage of a pagefile ... (advanced system properties, windows only).

GUI resources run short after opening the 60th ViennaInstruments player in ViennaEnsemble ... well, if you are beyond 60 tracks please use 2 machines for the moment.

there are several threads regarding amount of loaded data - basically keep 1 GB RAM free for the operating system and some 100 MB for other stuff (i'm referring to physical memory!) - loading time is increasing proportionally to amount of content to be loaded ... eg. for 24 GB on a 32GB computer it can take 20 minutes or more depending on harddisk-, FSB-, memory-speed, chipset and number of different collections.

in case you often have to switch projects with similar presets and stay below 30 tracks one could use the *dummy host trick* to keep samples loaded ... but this goes beyond the current topic already ...

I find that without a Page file, loading time increases proportionally. With a Page file it slows down drastically between 7 and 8GB, and then speeds up around 10GB. I also find that if I use too many cells (I know, what's "too many"?) in a matrix, or even the last four matrices in an Instrument, loading slows down again.

  • Hi Christian, hi all, I´m about to order a 16GB slave with: CPU Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 4x2.33GHz Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 P45 Ram: 2x 8192MB OCZ PC2-6400 CL5 KIT Vista U Any comments? shall I? If you don´t scream NOOOO! I´ll go for it tomorrow....and ´ll let you know.... Cheers from Hamburg PS: this still seems to be Pioneer´s work...

  • Please post back on your success (or troubles). I'd like to know how you fare.

    Thanks,
    Mahlon

  • there are a lot of very positive reports about the OCZ PC2-6400 - just don't overclock your gigabyte board would be my only recommendation ...
