  • Persian Microtonal with VSL

Here is an early sketch of some ideas using the Persian mode of Chahargah.  I have detuned two of the pitches in order to create the authentic Persian intervals.  Then, I had my brother improvise in this mode over the chords on the kamantcheh (Persian spike fiddle).

Let me know what you think.  For many of you, it may simply sound "out of tune."

  •  Well, for my ears it really sounds good and surely is evocative. More than the detuned intervalls the somehow clashing sounds in the beginning might offend some conservative (western) ears. But I dont think you have to change them unless you want this to be a coca cola jingle[:D]

I would be interested in which intervals you changed (cents).

  • Thanks.

I would think of it as a major scale where the 2nd and 6th scale degrees are flatted, but only by a quarter tone rather than a half step. So:

    B - C (half sharp) - D# - E - F# - G(half sharp) - A# - B

The trick is that these alterations aren't exactly quarter tones, and are in fact to a certain degree not fixed depending on the expression required, but the above formula gives you a sense of what I did.  Now, stacking the harmonies the way that I have is by no means a traditionally Persian thing to do.  That's just my own sick sensibility for beautiful and interesting harmonies. [:)]

  • A nice demonstration of VSL versatility and global attitude. :-)

  •  It sounds great. It's very evocative and atmospheric.

Dear VSL, please give us a persian spike fiddel! Just kidding. Ozoufonoun, I really like your music. A friend of mine, who is from Iraq does scales like this, too. Especially the beginning, where you got those interesting colours is very cool stuff. If you could give the whole piece that detail it would become some kind of oriental ligeti. I would really like to hear more to come. How did you detune it, by the way? Pitchwheel? A tuning tool (like in Kontakt 3) for VI ist still on the wish list ...

How is that technically done by using VSL?

  • Lauri,

You simple tune the samples to the required temperament, that's all

  •  Thanks for all the kind words. Here is how I did it in a bit more detail:

1.assign the pitch bend wheel of my keyboard controller to the pitch control in the VI.

2.Adjust: Pitch Bend Range  in the Perform screen of the VI.  I adjust this so that in order to create the pitch that I need I simply use the pitch bend wheel at its maximum.  This makes it easier for me to make the adjustments for these pitches when they occurr in my piece by simply going in to the midi editor in DP and putting in maximum CC value changes.  Although this makes it simpler than actually having adjust to a specific value in the editor, it is still a terribly tedious process.  This brings me to the next point....

I would love it....let me say that again:  I WOULD LOVE IT, if a mapping function could be built in to the VI so that I could have certain pitches adjusted by certain amounts for one scale, and then instantly switch to another scale.  There are third party applications that apparently do this, but it would be great if the player could handle this.

In any case, I'm very excited that it is at least possible, and am going to start REALLY exploring it.

    Hope that helps.

I am very drunk right now... but still .... + 1 count me in. (I'm pretty sure, I won't regret it tomorrow : ))

Let me put in an other way. Is it possible to have constant 24 note scale? Is it possible to have constant well tempered clavies scale?

  •  Not without a third party product sending the tuning info to the VI in real time.

  • Cubase has a MIDI plugin that sends information to VSTi so that you can play live with different tunings. however, I don't know whether or not Vi responds to this plug.

  • It seems that EW has embedded microtuning in some of its packages:
