    Hi All,

    I just bought the VSL SE bundle. My current setup has:

     Logic 8

     ProTools 7.4

     G5 2.0 dual

     4 gigs RAM

     RME Multiface

     MBox

     Windows XP on a PC with GigaStudio

     I'm waiting for the new MacPros to come out before upgrading my main studio computer. I'm due for a new MacBook and am considering getting the MacBook Pro 2.53 ghz / 4g RAM / 7200 rpm HD as an interim solution. I'm thinking that I could use the powerbook for VSL in stand alone mode perhaps and use the G5 for all other work. I'm a film composer and am hoping that I could use this setup for a few months until the dust settles with the new models... once they come out.

    I'm not quite sure how best to hook everything up. Ethernet between the 2 Macs would do the trick? I haven't seen this in action yet so it's a little hard for me to imagine. VSL would act like GigaStudio on the PC i.e. respond to midi, appear in Logic, bounce to audio etc with no audio card in the MacBookPro?

    I'd appreciate any enlightenment. I'm going to watch the VSL video tutorials today. thanks so much,

    Hello,

    Watch the video tutorials for VE3 - this is what you're after. If you like what you see you can try it out before buying it. I'm running a MacBook Pro using Logic with a WinXP box as slave and it's been working like a dream for me. No soundcard needed on the XP machine.

    Hi All,

     I'm considering using a new MacBook Pro 2.53 ghz with 4 gigs of RAM as a slave with Vienna ensemble 3 synced to my G5 with Logic. It's a temporary setup until I get a new main computer. I'm just wondering if the RAM limitation will allow me to still take advantage of VSL.

     Anyone using a MacBook Pro as a VSL slave with Vienna Ensemble 3?

    welcome judith, i took the liberty to merge your posts and editing them to recover linebreaks ... unfortunately we still have an issue with the editor in safari ...

     

    a MacBook Pro sounds to be a good interim solution as long as you're intending to upgrade to say the special edition.

    the 4 GB RAM should allow you to load at least 2 GB of sample content which is ~50% of all available patches in the special edition full library - depending on condition of the MacBook possibly even more ... i remember some early VE3 tests with exactly this configuration.

     

    my recommendation would be to connect the MacBookPro with a direct cable to the second gigabit port of you G5 and just make sure the network range for both does not interfere with the one on the first port on your G5

    Hi Christian, Thanks for the advice! I'm pretty convinced that the MacBook Pro will do the trick for me for a few months considering what you've written about the RAM and loaded patches. I bought the SE and SE Plus, taking advantage of the sale that was posted. I'm not in my studio during the holiday and so I can't install VSL and get going yet. I have to admit that I've been worrying about my G5's ethernet port in that I thought that it only had one. If it indeed has 2 then all is well! Sorry about the formatting problem with Safari.     G5s since end of 2005 have 2 gigabit ports ... so in fact it depends on your model ... if you don't have 2 NICs just add a gigabit switch to your setup - you'll just have to be a little bit more careful with your network setup then ...
