  • Can't get VI2 and/or VE2 started...

     Hello all,

This summer I purchased the App. Strings 1 and did a quick install to play with it. It worked then. After that I didn't have much time for music, because I had to move to another house, reconnect everything, etc.

This weekend I downloaded the latest version AND the Vienna Ensemble 2 in order to integrate this 4th "slave" with my DAW setup. However, as soon as I start either VI2 or VE2 it crashes as soon as the main window is displayed.

I tried a lot of things: update the Syncrosoft software, uninstall GigaStudio 3.x, install SP2, install SP3. Nothing helps...

Config: AMD Athlon PC (XP 3000+), 3 Gb, XP/SP3 Pro, RME HDSP 9656, MidiOverLan (1.2 old version), mostly controlled via RD (16 bit graphics). Since this was my previous DAW, there are still a lot of VSTs installed (should I remove them?).

I hope that anyone can give me some hints or even point me to a simple solution.

    Regards,

    Peter E.

  •  Did you remove the Gigastudio memory tweaks?

    DG

  •  I just checked, after reading the sticky on memory issues. But the settings were all default (zeroes). I actually never used Giga on this machine, so I probably never ran the optimizer.

  •  peter, do you say you don't even reach the dialog to select your audio driver?

have you by chance set the RD to route audio the main computer instead of leaving audio on the client?

another shot into the blue: check your drivers32 registry section for colliding or doubled wave entries ... possibly more important midi entries

edit: i'm trying to move those mainly technical issues to the general discussions forum to keep the VI forum more focused on kind of *musical* VI topics - i hope you don't mind

  •  Hi Christian,

    Thanks for the support.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to fix it yet... :-(

I checked the RD settings and when I switched to sound from keep local I was able to start VI2 and VE2, which then notified me of having no output nor Midi (that's a hint to focus on either of them).

Indeed, my Registry had quite a few superfluous Wave driver entries, so I cleanup up stuff like Wave5, Wave5 etc... To no avail. I then uninstalled the RME HDSP driver and cleaned up all references to the driver and its software from the Registry. After this, VI2 and VE2 will also start, noting the lack of an audio driver.

Note: I have NOT uninstalled my MidiOverlan, which can be trickier to reinstall...

When I install the latest RME driver (which includes WDM support) it's again a big nono... As soon as the application window is displayed I get the same Windows dialog box, offering me to send info to MS.

I will now try to disable MidiOverLan (not uninstall it), but I have the gut feeling that the problem is actually audio driver related (weird, because RME is one of the best).

    Cheers,

    Peter

  •  I still haven't got them working... :-(

It is obviously an interaction between VE/VI and the RME / Windows audio system. Disabling the RME driver cures the crash. But, even with a non-WDM driver from RME from 2005 VI and VE crash...

I also cleaned up the registry (there were no serious problems with too much wave or midi registrations).

So, I will first have to migrate the other software from this former DAW and then reinstall XP. Doh, this will costs me another bunch of hours...

    Somewhat frustrated,

    Peter

  •  peter, what firmware and driver version do you have with your RME HDSP 9656 .... we have heard lately about a RME RayDat card also crashing, but i can't find the driver version for this case now .... have you tried to go one driver version up or down?

  •  Hi Christian,

I don't have the version numbers here in my kitchen ;-) but I used the latest (for the entire HDSP series) from jan 2009, I believe it ended with 7.

Then I also tested with a much older driver, from 2005, something like 2.83, for the HDSP series.

I know there is a special installation procedure, which I always follow. I also once cleaned up the registry to remove all other references to previous versions.

The silly thing is, that VI with Appasionata worked last summer on this PC... Last week I installed the latest Syncro software and the latest versions of VI2 and VE2, that's when the troubles started.

I als upgraded my old MOL driver to MolCP3, but I already knew the crash is not related to Midi.

Weird, isn't it? I also did some examininations with Dr. Watson as simple debugger. Maybe you are interested in a logfile from Dr. W?

    Cheers,

    Peter

  • Even with a completely clean XP installation, VE2 crashes... (see new thread)
