  • Motorised fader mapped to expression etc

Hi. I've been looking for a way to write my expression / filter etc automation(to control VSL) into Cubase using a motorised fader.  I was hoping the alphatrack or faderport would do this but apparently they will only control CC7 and nothing else.

I thought about the Behringer BCF2000 but it's a little big for my desktop.  Has anyone else had any luck finding something?

  • I use a Jazz Mutant, Lemur.  It works great.  I have a 9x9 grid, with each button labeled with the articulation and sending out 3 ccs

I use 4 faders to control expression, filter, vel xfade , and cell xfade.

It's about the same size as the Beheringer, though.

That's easily fixed. Just use a transformer

Thanks for your replies guys.  The lemur does look good but a bit out of my price range.

DG, I was thinking about using a transformer as I already use that at the moment.  However. I got this from the alphatrack people: "Sorry, but I'm guessing not as long as the AlphaTrack is defined as a control surface in your Device Setup. To the best of my knowledge the input transformer only applies to devices selected as musical input sources, not control surfaces. Otherwise there would be a clash between the devices plug-in file and the transformer.

In which case, why don't you use CC7 for velocity xFade, and set Volume to another CC? Does that work?

  • Thanks for reply DG.  It probably would. unfortunately this is presales. Not sure I;m going to take the plunge as it still sonds fiddly and I still want to be able to map things like expression and filter.  Just don't think this device is up to the job.  Strange how the behringer system is more flexible.

    I'll keep searching :-)

  • I have worked out a way to control any midi cc with my Alphatrack by creating a special instrument for it in Logic's environment. This instrument is followed by a transformer which converts the volume or pan automation to any midi cc you choose. This works quickly and easily. I have no recent experience with Cubase, so I'm not sure if you could accomplish the same thing, but I can assure you that this is no problem with Logic and Alphatrack.

    Cheers,

    TomH

  • Hi Tom.  This is very interesting.  I remember I used to love the environment in Logic :-)

Does the alphatrack respond to motorised control when you do this?

    Matthew

  • Yes, because as far as the Alphatrack is concerned it's just automating volume and pan in the regular way, so all normal automation aspects are retained. It is the environment that creates a transformed midi signal flow to control any midi cc going to a specific instrument.

  • Hi. Thanks for the reply.  This is what I had assumed would happen in Cubase. However, what with frontier tech support being so adamant that it wouldn't ,it's hard to know whether to purchase and try it out.

If anyone get's a chance to do this in Cub 4 please let me know :-)
