  • VSL Demos Posted

The great folks here at *VSL have posted a couple of recent  demos of mine (User Demos>Dramatic.)

I had a lot of help with my sound (Altiverb/EQ's) from fellow VSL user SvK.

    Any comments most welcome.

*VSL has not just the best library but the best staff of almost any company I can name. Very personable helpful people here.

  • Hey Dave....great stuff!!.......On Motive-6...I love the moment at 2.14 through 2.33....and love the 3.23 build....ALSO the romance @ 4.16 is GREAT!....nice work.....SvK

  •  Dave,

It's good to hear some of your music here - it sounds great!  The Motive piece reminded me at times of Roy Webb, Max Steiner and Alex North without being stolen from them (congratulations on not stealing from someone - a rare accomplishment in today's film music).  It is very wide-ranging in expression and has a real feel for the instruments.  Also I thought the orchestral placement/EQ were unusually good - strings sounded very natural.  I'm not surprised that SvK helped on that as his stuff is great also.

  • SvK, I'll check those timings an we'll talk about those parts. Everyone loves the sound of your setup so congrats and thanks for all the help!

Ron, thanks very happy you liked the music!

William, very happy you like the music as well. Your opinion carries tons of weight since you have film music coursing through your veins. Yes it's old school, pointing to those composers no doubt. It's just a richer musical field to play in. The fact that VSL posted it is a breakthrough for me since as you know I've never really had a proper sound. I'm basically relieved to not worry about my production values any more. (I look forward to any offerings you have in the works!)

Where's that Paul fellow? Time for his two cents or shillings or whatever those confused people use for money over there.

  • Money is worthless here now Dave.

While it's natural to listen to wondrous technical achievements with sample libraries like Stravinsky's Rite - I always prefer to get to hear something original every time. But hey - that's just me.

The one I'm listening to now is called Motive and had sordinos in there by the sound of it. Great sound and very mature piece. Love it. It has certain shades of Paris Je t'aime which I still like to listen to although obviously that was with a real orchestra. This one has some great late 50's early 60's moments and is what I would regard as quality cinematic noir. Very good.

Turning is excellent too. Great sound. Reminds me slightly of North although can't say why because it's not anything like North to be honest. It has that feel.

Well I think those two pieces are great and very inspiring. I like the orchestration on both of these. About perfect and not cluttered in any way. Good orchestration for the type of pieces in the sense that to me it's like being 10 again and watching quality American tv shows from the late 50's and early 60's. Great stuff. I listened to these on a pair of HD 600's and then through Quested VS2108's - you got the mix down very well.

Steve von Kampen helped out you say? About time he did something useful.

Well of course the USA is in lock-step with the UK on money matters Paul but that that's what makes both nations so great.

Yes SvK gave me the proper values for Altiverbs and lot's of EQ's as well.

Very happy you like the music, appreciate your very insightful remarks and of course share your opinion on original verses standard on mockups. Say hi to wife and kid and let me know when financial market will right itself.
