  • Are Vienna Instruments and East West QL Stormdrum 2 (PLAY edition) incompatible?

     HELP!

I am using Cubase 5.01 on a pc and I needed some kick-ass drums fast for a project so I bought East West Stormdrum 2 with iLok protection.

Now when I have an Vienna Instrument in a project I cannot use Stormdrum. It's interface is unresponsive/frozen and I can't click on a thing. By accident I noticed this is the same response you get when you do not have the usb iLok connected to your PC.

If I load Stormdrum 2 first and then load a Vienna Instrument everything is fine (don't know for how long). Switching VSTi slots (Stormdrum in first slot, then save and re-open project) did not work.

    Can anyone help?

  • Make sure that you have the latest "play" update. It is alot more stable.

    Thanks, for your response.

When it didn't work I updated the following:

    • PLAY (v1.2)
    • Stormdrum 2 (v1.0.4)
    • iLok driver
    • BIOS of my PC
    • Syncrosoft LCC (v5.4.14.3)

    But still no luck [:(]

  • the behaviour you're describing in your initial post lets me assume the following situation:

(iLok drivers and LCC do not collide usually, PT with iLok and VI open smoth side-by-side)

loading VI first doesn't leave enough (continuous?) memory on your computer what prevents loading,

on the other hand loading the other library first still allows the VI to find enough free memory (fragments).

how much memory do you have and which operating system? how is the memory situation after loading the one and the other (check taskmanager for details)

Here I got no problem too when I just open Cubase (syncrosoft) and Stormdrum 2 (iLok). The problem starts when I add a Vienna Instrument to the mix.

    Workaround:
    I have a 4-step workaround now that I use:

    1. Run to the computer shop and buy a Quad Core Vista64 Ultimate PC with lots of memory.
    2. Buy Vienna Ensemble 3 online and install it on the PC of step 1.
    3. Move your Vienna Instruments and Stormdrum 2 also to the same PC
    4. Use Fx Teleport to run Stormdrum 2 and Vienna Ensemble 3 to run VI's both from the new PC

This works and is I guess a future investment for when Vienna Ensemble Pro is available...but can someone explain my wife where the $$ went??

  • Have you tried different USB-Ports and -Hubs (with own power supply) for the Dongles?

No problems with C5, Play and VSL here whatsoever.

  • Hi Daniel,

did you try to instantiate Play before inserting Vienna Instruments? I think I have heard of something like this....

    Best,

hmm my 32bit XP system with 4GB RAM and /3GB switch says (while 2.3 GB used memory for OS and apps):

this would make me suspecting your system does not even recognize 2 of the 4 GB ...

  • If I understand the thread correctly, I had the exact same problem.  East West is aware, but no word on a fix. The workaround is to load an instance of Play (include loading a patch) before loading up Vienna. Its a pain if you forget to when you start a project, but no workaround as yet.

I am hoping that Ensemble Pro when it comes out will solve.

Yes, that works (see my original post/question). But I don't trust the solution because I have no idea what it does. What will happen if the project becomes large and other plugins get involved. Will it still be working when I load the project the next morning?

Hmmm...good point! I double checked with my 3rd PC, a AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core with 4Gb and there it gives numbers like you have.

    I will look into that.
    Thanx

Yep, I tried the back USB ports, the front panel USB ports and the powered USB (from Belkin) but still no luck! 😞

    Hi Christian,

I looked it up, tried everything but the /3GB switch will not work on my system. My best guess right now is that the problem propably is the 3x UAD-1(e) cards. For now, for time sake, I have to give up on getting the 3GB switch to work. But if anyone has a good tip

(maybe getting too off topic here [;)])?

I have a PC filled and connected with:

    • Win XP SP3
    • 4GB RAM PC6400
    • ASUS Formula Rampage motherboard
    • intel Q9450 CPU
    • 2x UAD-1 + 1x UAD-1e
    • NVIDIA GeForce 6500 (Dual Monitor setup)
    • 2x Edirol UA-1000 USB Audio interfaces
    • Wireless USB mouse +keyboard
    • Steinberg MIDEX8 USB interface
    • Syncrosoft USB eLicenser
    • Yamaha Motif Rack ES via USB
    • Nuemark USB record player
    • 4x Samsung Spinpoint Harddrives
    • LG DVD/RW
    • Floppy drive :-)
    • 650 Watt PSU

    Anyone?

    Daniël

  •  not sure if i shouldn't split the thread an move this part to general discussion ...

as hinted above: i'm under the impression your system does not properly report 2 of the 4 GB ...

open the case (remove power before), take out the memory modules, double check their capacity, stick them back strong but carfully.

during boot watch the memory counting up (if not set to displayor too fast hit [DEL] during boot and check in BIOS if the memory modules are really recognized.

with 2 GB memory the /3GB switch will not work - how could it ...

Christian I strongly suspect the UAD cards as well. these are well known for being memory hogs.

Regarding the /3gig switch, this can work on a 2GB machine, but can also be flaky, due to the fact that rather than crashing at about 1.2-1.5GB, it just steams memory from the OS.

  • I have the same problem. I recently bought East West Symphonic Choirs & Stormdrum 2. I wanted to add them to my Orchestral Template in Cubase 5 as a VST instrument but the PLAY-interface is alsways frozen - as described above. It's really annoying to do my hole template again (which was really a lot of work) just because I have to load the Play Instruments first. I've got a Quad Core 2,8 Ghz Prozessor running Windows XP SP 3, 4 GB RAM and as mentioned Cubase 5. Does anyone know if this problem occured with other VSTi too? (Would be good to know before starting the new template, but i think i'll just keep my East West samples in the very first slots...) lukas EDIT: I just found a "solution": You have to freeze all the vienna instruments in your slot... now add the PLAY VST and it will work... I've also realoaded the vienna instruments again (unfreeze) and it still works. It's not a good solution, but it's better than doing everything from the beginning ;-)

What I did was move Stormdrum to a second Win XP SP3 machine with 4Gb and use FxTeleport (waiting for Vienna Ensemble Pro) to play Stormdrum 2 (PLAY edition).
I still have the frozen interface first, but when I minimize and maximize the interface it is OK. So each time it freezes I just minimize and maximize. It is not pretty but it works for now!

Maybe you can try to run FxTeleport server and slave on the same machine where your Cubase is running if that is working better for you...
