  • How to blend to have it smooth as silk

    Hello,

I try to accomplish a "paddy" section for a SLOW violin /hoboe solo.

I need to have the "paddy" section smooth and lush. I use app. strings, and the voiscing is (is it?) following the rules written in "The study of Counterpoint" book, but the result is...well, far from what I want.

How to do this? Should I add a woodwind section?

    Stef

  • Perhaps if you post an audio example (a link) of what you are refering to we could be of more help.  Aside from just manipulating the vel X fade, Expression, Attack, Release, and layering with other string patches until something satisfactory comes along I don't know what to tell you.

Are you just interested in the working methods of other users regarding slow legato strings?

Currently, I'm working on a piece with adagio strings and I find it's like pulling teeth to get them to sound convincing.  Sometimes I think VSL should consider working on an Adagio Strings I and II libraries.

  • oh please please PLEASE Vsl make an Adagio Strings library. Better yet, Adagissimo! Adagissimo flautando, even  :)

  • ...layering with other string patches...

Could you elaborate a bit on this more, please? What other string patches do you have in mind?

Yep, I am also intersted to know how others work, if it is not a secret.

Well, I have in my arsenal some partitures as well, so, I can "see" how the famous composers orchestrated some well known pieces, but still...

adding a string pad from my synth/workstation helps  tremendeously. But I do not believe that this is the correct way.

  • Hello trifidmaster,

For me, it depends on the situation.  If I want the big string sound, I'll blend Orchestra Strings with Chamber strings.  If I just want a standard sized Orchestral, I'll blend Orchestra Strings with Solo Strings.  I generally don't blend more than two string patches together because of phasing issues.  sometimes I don't blend at all, again it depends on what sound I'm striving for.
