Not working as it should here...Opening the EXS editor, selecting the correct VSL tool and then adjusting the octave offset seems to fix it.

Any word from Vienna if this will be fixed?  I tried re-installing the performance tool thinking it might sort out some of the problems in Logic 9.  Now it doesn't show up at all.

Just noticed this myself: any EXS instruments that use the Performance Tool are corrupted in (or by?) Logic 9.

For example, I have Epic Horns. When you call up one of the performance legato patches and try to play legato lines, the result is completely garbled. In looking at the EXS editor's VSL tab, I discovered these patches default to "Thru" where they should be set to their stored setting (Horizon Legato in this case). These same patches come up perfectly in Logic 8.0.2 and earlier.

How this got jacked up in Logic 9's programming phase, I'll never know - but it has just rendered one of my crucial libraries useless. It's not like any work was done on the EXS24 for Logic 9 - how did this happen?!?

Between this and the vastly increased memory needs of Logic 9, I'm stuck in 8.0.2 - and praying they get this stuff fixed ASAP!

The only solution I've found is to open up the EXS editor and reselect legato.  Close the edit window and it will ask you if you want to save, click "no" and it will reload the patch with performance legato working properly.  The problem is you have to do this for each legato instrument every time you open a session.

Hey Colin,

Yeah, that's the only thing that works (other than not upgrading to Logic 9!), but unfortunately that's not a real fix.  In my case, my scoring template contains about 30 instances of just Epic Horns.  Opening the EXS editor for each of those every time I open a session is not an exciting thought ;-(

I didn't get this far in my experiment yesterday, but I wonder - if you save the instrument after fixing the legato setting, does it come up properly the next time?  I'll give that a shot today and report back.

By the way, it would be helpful for as many folks as possible to report this issue at http://www.apple.com/feedback/logicpro.html

I've tried saving both instruments and channel strips to no avail.  Also, one other word of warning - do no reinstall the EXS performance tool. I thought that might solve it, I was wrong.  If you do it won't show up in Logic at all no matter what you do.  It will only show up in Logic 9 as a legacy install from Logic 7 or 8. Fortunately I had a backup of my system drive I could revert to, and then reinstalled Logic 9. As it stands now we're definitely in trouble if we switch computers with a fresh Logic 9 install.

Wow!  Thanks for the heads up Colin.  Yeah, I started this process with a clone of my working system (10.5.6 & Logic 8.0.2) then upgraded everything from there (combo OS updater, etc.).

I can't imagine that this is a VSL issue - all the evidence seems to point in Apple's direction as far as who's stirring the pot here. Reporting this issue (Perf. tool reinstall bug) to Apple's feedback site would be good...

Thanks again,

Jim

Same issue here.  I'll have to do scoring work in Logic 7 until this is fixed.

It will be fixed, right??

Rob,

You can use Logic 8 - this problem started with Logic 9.  Also, I found out yesterday that it's not just VSL instruments;  Logic 9 is corrupting most (if not all) EXS24 instruments that have been created or edited in earlier versions!

Based on that fact, it doesn't look like this is a VSL issue; Logic 9 is simply not recalling certain EXS parameters properly.  The best thing you can do is report the issue here:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/logicpro.html

The more people that report it, the better.  Here's hoping!

Thanks Jim.  I did report already, following your suggestion.

Of course, it doesn't inspire confidence that, where it asks what version of Logic you are

using, Logic 9 is not an option!!

Good luck.

Heh, yeah, it's almost comical that in Apple's Logic Feedback page "Logic 9" is nowhere to be found...

That's standard procedure for them though - don't read into it.  Their feedback  bug reporting sites are always several weeks behind with version numbers - just leave that field unselected.  For some reason that's one part of Apple that manages to escape Uncle Steve's OCD  ;-)

This is obviously a bug in Logic 9 and we will contact Apple in order to find a solution. However you can re-select the appropriate legato mode in the EXS "edit" window, when you click on "VSL". This will solve the problem.

Thanks for your input Maya.  Unfortunately though that won't really solve anything, other than that one instance - only to have to do it again every time you load that patch!  Even if you "fix" the setting and re-save the instrument, Logic doesn't recall it next time.  This is a really serious bug that upon further research goes beyond just VSL and the Performance Tool - the EXS itself is in a world of hurt at the moment.  See these threads for details:

Logic 9 fatal flaw: corrupted EXS instruments

Logic 9 corrupts EXS insts created/edited in Logic 8

Logic 9 corrupts EXS insts that use VSL performance tool

Many of us have rather large templates that use dozens (if not hundreds) of these instruments;  the second you install Logic 9 and open one of these templates, your custom EXS library (especially those dependent on the Perf. Tool) is toast.

Also, the Performance Tool itself isn't even recognized by Logic 9 if you do a fresh install - it will only be recognized if carried over from a previous (upgraded) install.

Not good!

Thanks again Maya - hope you can get Apple's attention on this!

IIRC there was a similar issue with L8.0 fixed in L8.01 a few weeks later ....

Sure hope so.  I sent a quick note about this to one of my contacts at Apple (he's VERY high up the food chain when it comes to Logic) and he confirmed that it's being looked at - that's encouraging news!

This is good news, I am just refusing to install the Logic 9 upgrade box I have just at reach here. I will wait for the update and stay on 8 for now...Hopefully wont be too long.

Thanks !

Hey Marc,

Hate to say it, but you're better off.  It's very disheartening because there are SO many great new features, fixes & additions (some of which I've been begging for for years) - but bugs like this are absolute show-stoppers.  I know there will be a maintenance release soon - I just hope it's REALLY soon, and that it sorts all this stuff out.  It's definitely good to know they're looking at it...

Yes I believe so, I got burned before updating on new software too soon.
Unless the new OSX Snow Leopard fix these problem areas. I doubt Logic 9 will be SL ready in september though, it if ever needs updating...

We shall see...

Thanks !

Jim, I just wanted to say thanks for raising the volume on this problem. This is the most audacious bug I can remember in six major releases (I'm sure others recall worse). For now, we have an Apple sampler can't recall Apple settings within an Apple program running Apple OS on an Apple computer. This would make EXS, umm, a fifth-party plug-in.

For routine Apple patrons, it's like buying a new version of Address Book and finding out that the phone numbers in previous files had been changed.

Oh well, this too will (be) patched.
