  • Cubase 4 Studio + VE 2 + Vienna Suite Convolution Reverb question.

Hi all, This is my first post but I have been lurking on these forums for a while. I'm a new user to VSL and I have this problem of creating depth to my songs. I'm talking about the close(strings)-mid(woodwinds)-far(brass and percussion) kind of thing..

I would like to know if it's possible to create this depth effect with the programs mentioned in the subject of this topic? If it's possible then we can start the main discussion of guiding me step by step through this.. :)

Hope I didn't scare anyone away by this..hehe

    Hi Pasi,

and welcome to the forum community [:)]

Something in your mail obviously scared your colleagues here, so let me jump in:

Of course you can create "depth" with the Vienna Suite Convolution Reverb, and I think that you will like Beat Kaufmann´s Tutorials, he gives a great intro to new users of the VSL.

The basic idea behind the different depths of the orchestra is quite simple: The more reverb you add, the further away the instrument seems to be. Of course the panning also plays an essential role, as you are positioning the instrument in the virtual room.

    Hope that helps,

    Paul

  • Thanks for the answer Paul. Indeed they were scared about my post..haha

I have already put Beat Kaufmann's Tutorial 2009 on my shopping list so all I have to do now is wait. I tried to do that depth thing with Cubase but failed. Maybe I need someone to teach me how to use Cubase more efficiently.

I wish someone could make a step by step instructions how to make that depth thing in Cubase. With all that dry/wet fader things and how to set them up. Even better would be a template which has one MIDI track and the three depths already created & linked so all I need to do is add more MIDI tracks and start composing. I guess that's too much to ask anyways.. :P

    Hi Pasi,

I´d suggest to check out our Tutorial of the Special Edition Demo Song!

You have all the mixing, positioning and reverberation with the built in reverb of the main sequencers available!

Download the project files and watch the videos - this should be a good starting point!

    Best,

    Paul

  • Thanks Paul. I will do that. :)

  •  Pasi,

Google for information on how reverb is built up: early reflections that gradually resolve into the reverb tail. The ranges in which this happens are very important with respect to how our brains work! David Griesinger from Lexicon has written some very interesting (but sometimes rather scientific) papers on this. You can move instruments further back on the virtual stage best with early reflections. If you can do this separately for the different instrument groups this will even enhance the picture. If well done, a singe reverb tail over the mix can complete the image. But this is just one of the ways of adding ambience... ;-)

  • Thanks for answering Peter. I will check out this asap. :)
