  • Setting up a Mobile VSL PT8 system...please help!

We are attempting to setup a portable writing suite on a Apple Macbook Pro. Our main sound source is the Vienna Symphonic Library currently running about 25 of the basic patches - we'd like to load some of the full patches with all the extra articulations - but we are running short of RAM. We currently have 4Gb installed. We can upgrade the system to 8Gb of RAM at a cost of £1,000 but wanted to be sure that the VSL will successfully make use of this additional memory. We are running the VSL via Vienna Ensemble 2 in pro-tools 8. Can you advice? Kind regards

  • Dear tamborine,

Vienna Instruments and Vienna Ensemble for Mac are still 32 bit software. This means that each application can allocate a max. of 4GB of RAM (2 ^ 32 = 4 294 967 296 bytes = > 4GB) minus approx. 1 GB for libraries and frameworks. To our experience VI/VE (= all plug-in´s together) can allocate a maximum of 2.8 GB of samples. When this limit is exceeded the application will crash easily without warning. You can check the RAM load in your <Activity monitor> application and choose the process Vienna Ensemble Server to get an overview over your RAM usage.

However upgrading you RAM to 8 GB does make sense since other applications and the OS need memory too.

Moreover, a 64 bit version for Mac OS X is currently in development and will be released soon.
