  • Automating The Launch of Several VE Instances on a Mac

Do any of the veterans here use Automator to launch and load multiple VE instances on a single computer? Can this be done with Automator? I've never used it in my life, but if I am to start running instances outside of Logic to maximize RAM, I have the feeling that something like this could help.

To rephrase the question, what is the easiest way to launch and load multiple instances of Stand-Alone VE's for a template?

  • I'd imagine you'd get a different answer from just about anyone here... I've been using iKey <http://www.scriptsoftware.com/ikey/> for quite a while now, and I find it extremely useful and customizable. You could setup one shortcut to launch several instances of VE, and load up particular patches for each instance with a pre-defined time delay, blah, blah... gets geeky, but it really works.

  • Thanks a lot. I didn't know about this or any other automation program. I assume you use this because it's easier than Automator, but am I wrong to think that Automator can do the same thing?

You couldn't prove it by me so far. I've taught Automator how to open Vienna Instrument Standalone, but I can't figure out how to have it load a specific .matrix file. One would think that a .matrix file saved in VI Standalone would be opened by a double-click on that file. I've tried recording Automator -- "Here, watch me, I'm opening the Flute" -- but it's not working. It's always tough when you've got a lot of learning curves running at once.

iKey looks good, but it seems like a program that came out before Automator, to address a void that Apple may have since filled.

  • Three Newbie Hazards now understood.

    1. I can't get Automator to open an Application, but if I drag an alias of that application (here Vienna instruments) onto the desktop, Automator can open via the alias. (User error somewhere, I suspect.)

    2. Don't try to drag and drop a matrix with the mouse. Automator doesn't seem to understand that. Open using the File drop-down menu in VI.

    3. Load a Preset, not Matrix. Yeah, how can a user of six years not know this? It makes more sense if you've never accessed VI outside of Logic, or if you've never needed to serially load a lot of instances.

It's vital that I learn these bulk VI stand-alone loading techniques, because the MOMENT I do, VSL will announce a 64-bit player.

Tips or endorsements of other methods are still welcome.
