  • Epic orchestra Questions

    Hi!

Here are some questions about Epic orchestra that I can't figure out after reading the product page:

    1) How many velocity layers per instrument and articulation? How many variations for the staccati? Are the keys chromatically sampled or are the samples stretched? What kind of technology is used to prevent the machinegun effect?
    2) Why so few useful articulations for woodwinds and brass? There are more available for the string section, so it seems illogical. [*-)]
    3) Why no Bass clarinet in the woodwinds section? IMHO an epic orchestration needs a full section sound, hence a bass clarinet for the fundament helps reinforce the tonal quality of Bassoons. [*-)]
    4) What kind of laughable "epic" brass section consists of only Horns and Trumpets?  If I'd try to sell that to a director he'd just laugh at me.. [:D] Can we please have Trombones and at least one Tuba in the ensemble, please? Pretty please?
    5) Can we please have a complete brass section mapped out on the whole keyboard as you did with the woods and strings? Would be awesome (an consistent with your obvious intention to imitate Symphobia... [:D])!

Now some questions which are indirectly related only to "Epic orchestra":

    6) What is the advantage of "Epic orchestra" for someone that already owns SE and SEP? From the product page it seems that EO is a cut down version of SE (with the addition of the Trumpets and few ensemble patches).
    7) Are those supposedly useful channel strip presets only useable with your Vienna Suite? Unfortunately the wording doesn't make it clear what exactely those are..
    8) Will there be a sound set for Sibelius 5/6, so we can use those useful ensemble patches for quick sketches?

All in all it sounds like a very interesting product. It would be great if someone from VSL could answer my questions. Thanks in advance for taking the time!

  • Hi Peter,

    here are your answers [:)]

    1) there are 2 staccato variations. No reduction of velocity layers or the mapping scales, they are identical with the "big" DVD Collections (so you get more velocities than in the Special Edition with, e.g., the Percussion instruments).

    2) We basically added pizzicatos and tremolos,. These articulations are not available with wind instruments.

    3) everybody has his preferences, and it´s very easy to add more download instruments to the epic orchestra anytime.

    4) see 3

    5) you can easily stack the brass section in VE PRO, especially with the 2 ranges - you can define the play ranges yourself in this case.

    6) you get the fanfare trumpets, cornet (performance legato & portamento!) and more string articulations

    7) you can also load the channels without Vienna Suite, of course, but then there are no effects added. The advantage of the channelstrips is that your epic orchestra is already set up and ready to play.

    8) Let´s see if we can add that as well.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hello Paul!

Thank you for your reply! You cleared up all the open questions.

However I would like to insist that you at least consider adding the samples I asked for in #4 or at least #5 (sus and stacc would suffice). The result would be an awesomely useful "all in one" sketchpad for quick mockups!

  •  This is a pretty nifty "bonus"...i mean, ...its like close to 10gigs, right?

Certain other "epic" collections has a similiar concept , but a very different price....

Now, i guess im in need of VE Pro anyway, but just for clarification, the Epic orchestra will not be available for purchase without Vienna Ensemble in some form? Regular Download Instrument?

  • Hi,

the Epic Orchestra will only be available with Vienna Ensemble PRO.

  • hi, is it possible to get the demo file of epic orchestra with the channelstrips without buying the epic orchestra? currently i'm tyring the demo licenses of vienna ensemble pro and vienna suite. but it isn't possible to get a demo of epic orchestra. but i think that you can use the epic orchestra channelstrips without the epic library, can't you? i hope you understand what i mean :). well, i want to load the epic orchestra channelstrips. then i want to load the instruments of the VSLse, instead of the instruments of epic orchestra. i first would like to see the configurations of the channel strip, before i decide to buy the epic orchestra. i hope that somebody can help me...

I like the EPIC, provides me good sounding instruments, but then again, I don't have much of an orchestra in VSL (only a hobo). Gerard

    Hi Radagast,

I'm sorry, the channel strips will be only available with the Epic Orchestra product.

    best

  • thanks for the answer. but what datatype are the channelstrips? is it a VEpro project-file? isn't there any way to get this? perhaps somebody can send it per mail? or is that illegal...? i thought the channelstrips are independent of the library...

  • Hi, I'm new to VSL instruments and wondering if 2 x Round Robin is the Standard for most short patches. Purchased Epic Orchestra w/ VE Pro but haven't used it yet because I'm still waiting for my syncrosoft key to arrive.

    Hi Radagast,

the channel strips are part of the VE PRO project file.

You can get very far if you use the many presets of the Vienna Suite to make your own channelstrips for your collections. Check out the free demo of Vienna Suite, and of course the Videos.

Yes, all staccatos give you 2 alternations, the Timpani Single HIts even give you 4 alternations with the Epic Orchestra.

  • ... and of course then there would be the dedicated Repetition Performances, too. They come with the full package instruments, though.
