hello,

I'm getting ready to upgrade from a Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz with 4 GB of memory running version 10.4.1 and Digital Performer 6 to a Mac Pro Intel 8-Core running Snow Leopard with 8GB of memory and Digital Performer's most recent upgrade to v.7. I own the full Vienna library including some extras like special brass, saxaphones etc. What do I need to know concerning Vienna Instruments software and this this particular upgrade? I keep all my Vienna Instruments on separate drives. Do I just reinstall what I have or is there an updated version of Vienna software that needs to be downloaded.

Thanks!

I'm sure you'll get some advice soon, but the first thing i would say is 8GB is bad news. You should get 12GB (6x2GB) in order to get some sort of performance out of your new machine.

Mark, I made the transition myself just a couple months ago.  If I can make a recommendation:

Follow this guide and be VERY VERY careful about what you migrate, and do not use the automatic migration assistant option that the new mac presents you with.  Start from scratch and take your time to do the re-installs. It'll save you a ton of headaches later.

Thanks Kerry. I'll definitely check it out!

8GB on an 8-core won't be enough? I'm surviving now on 4GB quad -- the only annoyance is fan noise. No hiccups though. Are you sure I won't have enough juice?

No, you misunderstand me. It's not a question of enough or not enough, it's that 8GB is the wrong amount for triple channel RAM. 6Gb will probably give you better performance than 8GB

Wow, valuable information. Does this apply to iMacs as well, or just MacPros? Is it something specific about the memory configuration of quad-cores?

New iMacs are expected in a couple of weeks -- maybe new MacPros as well, and even Mac Minis and/or laptops. Some surprises are expected, but it's good to be aware in advance of what sort of memory configuration issues and memory block sizes are ideal, which I didn't realise was a separate issue from Total Memory.

I know nothing about iMacs. It has nothing to do with quad cores either. It is to do with the way the motherboard is designed. Memory should be installed in 3s. there are also other things, but the main point is that when you have 8 slots for memory, you should leave the last 2 empty.

just to reiterate ... _if_ you have an i7 or XEON 5500 processor, since those use triple channel memory.

it does not apply to core2duo, core2quad and XEON 5000 - 5400 which have dual channel memory.

and remember: a CRAY is the only computer that runs an endless loop in just four hours ...
