  • VE Pro - StylusRMX not consistent each time sequencer plays

I'm finding a very frustrating issue is arising. Stylus RMX, when loaded into VE Pro, triggers loops at different offsets every time I play my sequence. The actual tempo is conveyed, but the note-on triggering is not.

One time it may all be in proper sync to Cubase's bars/beats, the next time I play the sequence it may be off as much as a 32nd or 16th instead. It's kind of random. And it's regardless of where the playhead starts, whether on a bar's downbeat or not, etc.

This does NOT happen when Stylus is loaded natively into Cubase. It triggers properly all the time.

Given that evidence, I am suspecting it is a bug with VE Pro.

I've tried many different things - all the modes within Stylus (host sync, or triggering immediately, or at next 16th). I've played with VE Pro's buffer setting. I've switched between 32-bit and 64-bit VE Pro servers.

I'm doing this with VE Pro instantiated on the same machine as the sequencer. VEPro's buffer is set to 0.

    Cubase 5.1 - OSX 10.5.8 - quad 3GHz Intel - 12GB RAM - Stylus 1.9.0e

  • Hello orchetect,

I have not had any troubles with Stylus RMX so for - plays back the MIDI information from the sequencer just fine.

How are you triggering your loops (what is a "playhead")?

    Best,

    Paul

  • It's just MIDI on tracks in Cubase, with Stylus configured in "groove" mode. 'Playhead' is just the transport in Cubase I'm talking about.

The issue here is with Stylus not triggering the start of loops when it should. Some times it does, some times it does not. Even setting Stylus to "immediate" trigger mode does not seem to help. Because Stylus uses meta information passed from the sequencer to determine when the "next beat" is, I am guessing VE Pro is causing inconsistent problems transferring this data.

For example: if a MIDI note that triggers a loop in Stylus starts at the downbeat of bar 10, only some times will the loop ACTUALLY start playing at precisely beat one of bar 10. Other times, it will lag and start playing a 16th later, or more. It changes every time I hit play in Cubase.

  • I have also tested this out in DP 7. The same phenomenon happens. Here's the steps to reproduce:

    1) Load up a StylusRMX plugin in a VE Pro server and insert the server plugin in a sequencer, with a loop preset in "groove mode" at either "next beat" or "next sixteenth" as the trigger-mode.

    2) Put in a MIDI note one bar in duration onto the MIDI track of the sequencer, starting at the beginning of a bar, and put the sequencer's playhead at precisely the start of that bar.

    3) Activate the sequencer's metronome

    4) Press play in the sequencer and listen to whether the beats of the Stylus loop and the sequencer's metronome line up. IT'S DIFFERENT EVERY TIME YOU PRESS PLAY from the same precise playhead start each time. One time it will be dead on, another time it will be way out. It's audibly obvious, that's how far out it will be.

Please can someone at VSL address this issue? Once again, this does not happen when Stylus is loaded natively inside a sequencer.

However an interesting observation is that when Stylus is in "Immediate" mode it seems to be much better, from my limited testing.

I have not tested out other plugins but this brings into suspicion VE Pro's reliability for handling sync info.

  • This will be fixed in one of the next updates. Thanks.

Great to hear. Loving this app so far! Can only get better. Cheers

  • Was this problem ever addressed and included in an update. I'm still having massive timing irregularities (tried all combo of latency setting etc.)...very frustrating!

  • Hi Whitey,

No complaints since 2009... I think we´ll need a bit more information about your setup.

Best to send this to support@vsl.co.at, maybe with a short example in a zipped song?

    Thanks,
    Paul
