A silly question probably, but does using Spotlight in OSX on my VSL sample drives make things better or worse? Typically the drive contents don't change that frequently so there's probably not a lot in terms of updating the index files.
At present I explicitly exclude the two drives from Spotlight but wonder if I'd get an improvement in start up times if I didn't - i.e. when VE is scanning content files is it quicker with Spotlight on?
