  • Pro Tools 8 and Windows XP workarounds?

Well, that was a waste of money.

I just purchased the bass waterphone library and a new Vienna Key only to find out that VI and VE only work as RTAS in MAC. I... well, I'm a PC. I've seen two workarounds to run VI and VE using FXpansion adapter and Plogue Bidule. Both solutions look very attractive except that they cost money. I just spent the money on this small library and it would be a waste of my limited resources to shell out $99 just for an adapter to use it.

Does anybody know of any other workarounds that don't involve me throwing away more cash for $0 income work?

Or, does anybody know of future Rewire or [WIndows] RTAS support on the part of VSL? Either will suit me fine as I already use Gigastudio 3 through rewire. It's not enough to route the audio from VI or VE to PT by workaround. I need to set up MIDI tracks in PT to control the instruments.

    Thanks guys,
    Elanvital

  • Hi there, Don't waiste your time and/or money with FXpansion. At best, it was very unreliable but most of the time it simply does not work. Plogue Bidule is a great app BUT it does not work with VE-Pro. I've spent a lot of time testing VE with FXpansion and Bidule, using every possible combination of hardware ( and we have lots of DAW at the studio, on both PC and Mac ). It's just not happening. Best bet is to hope that Vienna will SOON put out an RTAS for PC. Strange that they did not consider this option since i know so many music and, especially post studio, that use multi machines for scoring and sound design who are strictly on Protools HD and PC.

  •  Actually, Bobby, FXpansion does appear to work for me - in a somewhat limited capacity - for RTAS with Ensemble PRO - both on XP and Vista.  It is not without issues, though:

    - one instance (on one PT instrument track) works fine, as expected.

    - more than one instance works ok for session open, but on session close, not all of the Ensemble instances shut down properly.  The network generally locks up, and you must reboot all machines.  Not pretty.

So if you can get along with one instance of Ensemble, go for it.  As for myself, I have a standard VSL orchestra server using (real) MIDI with 64 channels, and then I supplement special instruments for each piece on my one PT instance.  So far, I have managed with 16 or fewer "specials" per piece. Somewhat of a compromise, but workable.

A true RTAS Enemble PRO for Windows would be fabulous!  No more compromises.....

  • Not really, if you're using it on the server. VE via FXpansion sort of work ( with lots of limitations ) if it's used on the local machine, i guess this is how the above poster is using it. If you use it on the server machine ( how we want to use it ), it does not work at all. Basically, don't bother getting VE if you're using PT on PC til Vienna release an RTAS version.
