  • Running 32 bit VI in 32 bit host in XP64?

I apologize if the subject seems a bit convoluted, but I'm seeking some clarification as I've run across surprises before.  [;)]

My system runs XP64 - my question, can VI be installed as 32 bit on a 64 bit system, or does a 32 bit version exist, that will run within a 32 bit host?

To be specific, the intention would be to host it from within Finale 2010 (which only exists in 32 bit version).

To append to the question - would the same apply to VE?  I am thinking it would be beneficial to use VE within Finale in order to be able to load more sounds (in the manner of a patch bank)?

    Thanks!

You would only be able to run VI as a 32bit plug within Finale

With VE2 you can load the 64bit server; it doesn't matter whether Finale is 32bit or 64bit.

  •  Hi DG,

    thank you for confirming that!

In regards to the second part of my question, I was wondering if 32 bit VE would be able to be hosted from within Finale (in the xp64 os)?

    Thanks!

Why would you want to do that?

  • Is Finale supported and installable (actually run) on XP64?  If so, you technically could do what you're asking but I am confused (and DG as well) as to why you would run a clean "64-bit" environment and run 32-bit plug versions?  You'd be better off running Finale 32-bit (assuming it runs on XP64) and then running the 64-bit plugs from VSL.  (because you can run 64-bit plug-ins from 32-bit DAWs/Sequencers).

  •  I can understand the confusion, I will explain  [;)]

Finale does install and run fine on XP64.  (2008 without a hitch, 2009 needed a workaround at initial install, 2010 back to normal.

Yes, I do have the option of running the 64 bit plugs externally (as I was doing for a time with GS4 and others), but the sad fact of the matter is that I get playback glitches when doing so - patch changes sometimes don't change, strange issues when trying to play from within a piece (no sound), etc.   All this never used to be an issue in the past, but as makemusic seems to be focusing more on their internal hosting features (which do work quite nicely) they are sadly neglecting communication with external midi devices/software.

I would need to run the VE within Finale because, as I understand it, the VI is essentially one channel per instance, which means one instrument only per vst slot of which Finale possesses eight - plenty if you can load multiple instruments per "bank" but utterly inadequate if loading only one instrument per slot!  I have Wivi and Kontakt amonst others working without a hitch in this way, and wanted to investigate if the VE/VI combo is also an option.

    Thanks!

  • Just use the 64bit version of Vienna Ensemble hosted in Finale. That should solve all your problems, shouldn't it? 16 instruments per slot. In fact if you upgraded to VE Pro, you could get 32 MIDI ports per slot, so that would give you a total of 512 MIDI channels per slot or 4096 within the "limitation" of Finale.
