  • Which impulse response for Hollywood-sound?

hey guys, it's my first post in this board :). yesterday i got the demo license of Vienna Suite. it's a wonderfull plugin. now i'm trying the convolution reverb. can anybody suggest a impulse response and perhaps some preferences for a nice, warm hollywoud-sound? i tried all, but i don't have enough experience yet, to get the right reverb. would be nice if somebody could help me...

  • Hi and welcome Radagast [:)],

there are quite a few perceptions on the nice, warm Hollywood Sound - and the way to get there is to do everything right, from composition through arrangement and mixing.... and the components are different for every cue.

So I´m afraid you won´t get a simple answer to this question. Check out the EQ presets for the Vienna Instruments, you will find a lot of ideas there - and experiment with different settings in the Convolution Reverb. Your ears will tell you where to go.

  • The most important part of the Hollywood sound is not to be afraid to glop on the reverb! (In my opinon.) They typically add a Lexicon reverb to the stage sound, and Lexicons have a nice thick sound - in fact you can probably find samples of them to try in the convolution reverb processor.

Use predelay if things get too muddy, especially with the strings. And filter out excessive low end boominess on the send to the reverb.

Too much reverb can also sound terrible, but there's an art to being crass. :)

  • thanks for responds! well, i tried all the EQ-presets and exciter-presets. sounds very good...but i really don't know which reverb to use :). i actually have downloaded some impulse responses of the lexicon 960L. but there are so many impulse responses to choose...well, i think i have to trie some more hours :). i already tried hundreds of settings with roomworks of cubase. i wanted to have a reverb like the rivendell theme of "lord of the rings". the beginning is played with strings. but it sounds much more wider and warmer than everything i reached. but perhaps i need appassionata-strings for a bigger sound...

That's a good start. There are people in this business who spent years on it, and they still think that there's room for improvement 😉
