  • Serious performance issues

    Hi,

I have a Mac Pro Octacore 2.8 with 10GB og 800Mhz fully buffered RAM.

Being dual channel I have the following RAM setup:

2x1GB stock RAM and 8GB 4x2GB Kingston (the upgrade from apple)

    Risen A and B:

    A1 2GB

    A2 2GB

    A3 1GB

    A4 1GB

    B1 2GB

    B2 2GB

    B3 <empty>

    B4 <empty>

I have tried all thinkable ram configurations.

    Anywho!

I am working on a project in Cubase 5.1 using only the VSL. But I started this project ages ago, so there is one VI instance per channel.

Meaning I have 40 VI instances running (all RAM optimized so there is alot of RAM left). Is that a problem?

The problem I am having is that at the point where there are the most voices (27) the ASIO meter in cubase pops to 100% and I get crackles. I am using a Motu 828mk2 at the highest sample buffer setting, which is 1024.

However, looking at Activity Monitor as well, the CPU load divided on the eight cores are 50% at max (each).

What am I doing wrong? I own VE Pro now, would that give me a performance boost using several instances? Or only a workflow boost (I really like it)?

Further, I am using 3x 7200RPM 32MB cache hdds using one for OS10.5.8, one for VSL and one for the Cubase Projects.

    Any suggestions are highly valued!

    Thanks

    Fred

  • Dear Fred,

do you get these crackles too when switching to "built in Audio"?

Anyway I´d recommend to switch to Vienna Ensemble PRO since it allows you to allocate more RAM (Vienna Instruments and Vienna Ensemble are 32 bit applications and are limited to approx. 2.8 GB RAM -> 2 ^ 32 = 4 294 967 296 bytes = > 4GB minus approx. 1 GB for libraries and frameworks).

    Kind regards,

    Maya

  • Hi Maya,

    Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I do get this pops/crackles using the built-in driver as well. However, it allows me to go up to 2048 samples, which then removes all artifacts. I will convert the project to VE Pro and see if that helps!

    Thanks again,

    Fred
