Hi everyone. Just wanted to get some opinions on a piece i composed for a short film. The film is entitled "Reflections," written & directed by John Woodruff and Drew Tarvin, and is around six minutes long. It will be appearing at Slam Dance Festival in Park City next year. Technically this is my first official "score." 😊

The music goes from gentle and romantic, to disturbing and tense, and ends with a fairly energetic crescendo. The piece is about half symphonic and half electronic(a). I know the mix of the two styles may not be to everyone's liking here, but would at least like to hear any opinions about how the orchestral sections sound (regardless of the fact that they are unrealistically composed along with so much synthetics.)

    Anyhow, here's the link:

As far as VSL, i used mostly Appasionata 2 strings, Soprano Choir, SE Percussion, and Orchestral Strings 1 & 2 during the end finale. The piano is Old Lady, and is layered with SAM cimbaloms. Other percussion includes SAM True Strike 2 as well as Cinesamples' CInetoms. Most synths are Oddity (run through Ohmicide) and Sonic Charge's Synplant for the dissonant ambient tones. Blah blah blah.

Anyhow, would love to hear any opinions, good or bad. Although i prefer the good kind. 😊

  • I don't know why this hasn't gotten any replies, I think this is great!

I like how the synth blends smoothly with the orchestra, and the entrance is not too abrupt and doesn't throw the listener off.

I only have 2 small critiques and these are very minor and mostly just personal preference.

The dangling violin that comes in at :55 sounds thin and plastic to me.  Maybe add some expression, or add an 8vb to perhaps give it some substance.

Also, I would say that the drums that enter at 2:07 could use a bit more reverb, they sound pretty dry.

But other than that, I like it a lot, great job!

  • The music is great, only problem is you wanted us to rate the film score when we cant see the film.. so maybe the film score is horrible since we don't know whats going on visually or audio wise (if someones talking and your music is to over whelming)

But the music is good, I agree that the drums are too dry tho and need reverb, I didn't like the ending to much either, but then again I'm guessing it probably fit the film so who knows.

you got skills so keep it up!

I want to know what you used electronically because it was awesome.. please email me (since I may never check this post again)

I loved the electronic mix it's very top notch and blends amazing.. the music felt very full 2/5 the way though between the electronic mix and the orchestra.. loved it! I need to up my electronic game personally
