  • Orchestra/Appassionata)

    Hello everybody!

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide with your opinions!  I am about to embark on a film score where I will be using my sample collection.  The score will use mostly strings with a little bit of piano as well.  The samples will actually be used for the final score as well (no live recording).  I have the old generation of Orchestral Cube string samples.  However, I really need a boost to my sound quality and have stumbled upon both the Appassionata (1) and Orchestral Strings (1+2).

I am at a loss as to which sample library to buy.  On one hand I have the Orchestral strings that are more complete in terms or articulations/playing styles.  However, buying both libraries will cost me around $3000.  On the other hand Appassionata Strings require purchasing only one library which will cost me around $1300.  Does anybody have experience with both enough to tell me if I could get by and create a decent sounding score with just the Appassionata strings?  Does anyone have any complaints about either library that they think I should take into account?  Really what I need are opinions from people who have experienced both libraries.  Thank you so much!!

  •  John, while I do not have experience with any of those libraries, I'm wondering if you are aware of the VSL Standard Edition? Here you can get the most commonly used articulations for not only orchestral strings and Appassionata, but solo and chamber strings as well, and at a very attractive price.

    For more information, look here:

Best of luck with the film score.

    Best regards,

  • Thanks so much for your response, Henrik!

Normally, I would absolutely go for that deal.  It really is a great bargain!  However, with this score, I am looking to get the sound quality as absolutely close to "live" as possible in case there is a soundtrack release.  In order to do that I really need to have the full capability of each library.  I'm afraid I'll either have to buy the full edition of Appassionata or Orchestral in order to get the full ensemble with every articulation/playing style possible.

  • Hi John,

I may end up being corrected here!, but in my knowledge you already have the Orchestral 1+2 strings as they are the same samples as already exist on the Symphonic Cube. However they have been re-mapped for Vienna Instruments/Ensemble and are in 24bit as against 16bit on the Cube.

Appassionata are new samples for Vienna Instruments, evolving out of a generous "gift" sample session for previous owners of the Cube who signed up early for Vienna Instruments. They are fine samples and very useable though do not have the range of articulations of Orchestral Strings. Mixing and matching Appassionata with Orchestral, Chamber and Solo Strings can be a good technique but as ever it really depends on your style of writing and the effect you are trying to achieve.

If I were in your position and already had the Orchestral Strings samples (all be it in a previous incarnation) I would opt for the Appassionata. I guess listen to the various demos, see what you think, then take the plunge!

  •  Julian,

Actually it is MY mistake!  I don't own the Cube, I actually own the even older "Vienna Library Pro Edition" that was still in giga format!  I even have ponticello and muted string samples with that library, however I have noticed a distinct increase in sound quality between my samples and the new libraries.  Could anyone speak to the truth of that?  Have the new libraries been enhanced/remastered with better sound?  If not, then chances are, I'll just stick to my library, and get Appassionata.  But if the samples HAVE been upgraded between the old Pro Edition Giga and these new Orchestra Strings 1-2 then I will have to take the plunge!  Anybody have any idea??

  • I don´t know if there is an difference in quality, i can say, that i have the special edtion standard an extendet and recently buy appassionata strings standard (upgrading to extended soon) i have to say that if you want sting lines with an maximun of emotions you have to buy appassionata. So it´s always a matter what you want to do with it. :)
