Will this computer rec. by my IT guy handle MIR?

OS Windows 7 Pro (64 bit)

    Motherboard Asus P6T Deluxe V2

    CPU Intel 2.66GHz Core i7-920

    RAM OCZ gold 12 GB (6X2) DDR3/1600

Video Gigabyte GV-R435 OC (Radeon HD 4350)

Hard Drive Hitachi Deskstar 7200 RPM 1 TB X 2

    CD-DVD Writer Lite-On IHAS124-04

Case Antec NSK 6580 nB cas W 430 Watt PS

    Thnx,

  • we didn't explicitely test the i7 920, but an educated guess would be:

    256 samples latency / 700 voives / 22 instruments

    512 samples latency / 950 voices / 26 instruments

    1024 samples latency / 1050 voices / 30 instruments

but i'd suggest to choose a more powerful CPU if your budget allows for some headroom

  •  Terry, make sure your motherboard offers support for the upcoming Gulftown Core i9-processor.

I believe the P6T Deluxe V2-model from Asus does, but better check.

Then you can get a new computer now and simply replace the CPU later on, if you find you need more power for MIR.

Also you can overclock the i7-920 very heavily, try search the net.

This requires a good CPU cooler and a larger PSU than 430W though.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Henrik

    EDIT:

The upcoming CPU will not lead to a new processor series, I have just found out.

Thus it will not be called Core i9. Instead the name will be Core i7 980X.

  • Hi Christian,

I know you don't have MIR available for Mac as of yet.  Based on what you know at this time, would it be possible to run MIR on a Mac Pro - single machine with a small ensemble i.e. String Quartet? -- Also having the sequencer on the same machine........

  • Thanks Christian and Henrik for POVs. Yeah I'm choosing this next computer carefully. If I can knock some of these other ones out I have now and simplify my set-up I'll be happy.

    Room to grow is paramount.

    Cheers,

  • To those who know about overclocking:

-Does overclocking diminish the life of the cpu? Any other risks? From the article (link) one could assume that it has become a standard practice meanwhile.

-Does it mean that a i7 920 overclocked will have similar power to a 975 extreme ed?

    - How much more power is consumed? (bigger power supply needed?)

  • there are two types of overclocking with i7 processors:

    - automatic (up to 2 x 133 MHz depending on temperature and load of the CPU)

    - manual (possible with certain motherboards)

both require very good cooling for the processor, the memory, the chipset and a neat airflow in the case.

also you should consider how CPUs are selected after the production process: the very good ones become 975, the not so good ones 920 and the others go into the mid-range - so don't expect a 920 to be as stable as a 975 running at say 3.33 GHz ....

  •  veetguitar, read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overclocking

If you search the net, there are countless recipes on how to overclock various CPU + motherboards combos.

Personally, I overclocked my Q6600 2.4 Ghz recently to see what it could handle.

It ended up at 3.5 GHz.

Measured with CPU Mark (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/), this lead to a 43% increase in CPU performance.

In the end I decided to return to 2.4 GHz however.

My system's CPU-fan and chassis-fan had to operate at a higher rpm to handle the increased heat from the CPU, which got too noisy for me.

If you're going to experiment with overclocking, make sure you carefully monitor the temperature of your system.

I use CPU-Z, SpeedFan and Core Temp for this.

Yes, it would be possible.. Today I was playing and recording Eleanor Rigby with 6 solo strings using Sonar and MIR all on my MAC Pro. So i don't see a reason I couldn't do it with Logic if MIR would run on Leopard.

    That sounds encouraging Sergino[;)]
