  • question about sample drives

I'll be building a new computer. Regarding sample drives; with a 64 bit system with lots of ram can I just load all my samples on one 1 TB SATA drive or is it better to spread them out over several fast drives. I'm assuming it doesn't matter. I'll be running VSL SE (probably in VE), all of the Spectrasonics apps, and Kontakt.

  • Assuming that it;'s a normal drive, it is better to spread them out over multiple drives.

  • current harddisks are fast enough for your purpose. it goes without saying that you shouldn't record to a drive you're streaming samples from ...

edit: i just noticed DG told you the opposite ;-) for SE you wouldn't need to spread the files and to my knowledge spectrasonics also isn't too demanding ....

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

I agree that SE doesn't necessarily need more than one drive, but as the OP said "lots of RAM" (of course it depends on one's definition of lots) I wouldn't want to be streaming more than around 4GB worth from one drive.

Also I've found that it's better to put Vienna on a different drive from Kontakt.

With Spectrasonics, it all depends on which product, as some stream and some don't.

  • I'll be using an ASUS P6TD Deluxe which can take 24 gigs (6 x 4). The case will have 6 internal 3.5 bays. I'm figuring 1 TB for VSL samples, and 1 TB drive for Spectrasonics and Kontakt samples, a 3rd for OS and Apps, a 4th one for recordings. BTW, should I leave it for music exclusively or could I load Adobe CS4 as long as I stay away from the sample drives. I'm using my current Dual Core for internet. The reason I'm asking about drives is that I could use 10,000 RPM 300 gig VelociRaptors but why pay more if I don't need them.
