  • any plans for multiphonics of woodwinds?

i hope that vsl could answer this:

since i compose a lot of contemporary music, i sometimes (very seldomly, because the extensive usage can become annoying) use multiphonics, especially for saxophones, clarinets and oboes. any vsl-plans of recording such?

another thing that would be nice are air-sounds...

    cheers

    s.

  • Yes I am also desperately waiting for this.... a collection like that would be so great!

would buy on the first day that this is out :-) to my knowledge something like this has never been recorded before....

    greetings,

    Patrik

  • well, there are recordings of such. peater veale made a book for the contemporary oboe, karen levine for the flute for example. there is a CD accompanying it and you sort of could map them yourself, but then it would have a completely different sound then the vsl-library... so no gain there...

  • I know these books, and a few friends of mine have recorded all sorts of effects, multiphonics, air sounds, singing/playing and all that stuff, but as you said, it is not the recording quality of vsl and especially it cannot be used in the player.... as you said, no gain :-)

  • .... and there is the IRCAM-Solo-Instruments library from UVI Sound. You should check it out. I use them for articulations (such as multiphinics) which are not covered by the VIs.

  • Hi Stephan,

thanks for the hint... I'll check this out...

  • Hi Aural and Patrik...

stephank's suggestion is as far as I know the only 'readymade' sample library which contains the sort of extended techniques you seek. Its a system I use myself in which 90% of my samples are sourced through the VSL system and the rest are from additional libraries such as the IRCAM Solo Instruments. All of these run well under Ensemble Pro but you do have to tweak volume, panning, and response to get a close match. This takes time but in my experience and for my purposes it works well. Using Sibelius I can map extended technique symbols such as tongue ram for flute etc. so that Sibelius seeks out the alternative sound source on the same stave. However getting this working requires a bit of messing around in the XML Adobe SSE programme with which you can edit the articulation mapping of a sound set. If you want to know more I can send you modification list and an example template.

A bigger problem is with the multiphonics and the IRCAM system is that there is no official documentation of the correlation between fingering and resultant multiphonic. I contacted IRCAM about this some time ago and spoke to the sample developer there who passed on a text document which outlines the resultant pitches of each of the relative multiphonics mapped for the various instruments. It is quite extensive but without a correlation between fingering used and the resultant multiphonic it is a little bit useless. Nevertheless I also have a list of the books used by the performers from which the multiphonic fingers were sourced. If folks using this system want to pool resources to find the answers we can have a match that multiphonic competition (though best not here). At any rate if you just want the sound of the multiphonics these concerns are irrelevant.

Good luck... must run my daughter is throwing crockery around the kitchen... smash!
