  • Recording audio from VI

I've just installed VI. It runs flawlessly on my Sony Vaio with Windows 7 with no detectable latency. I'm very impressed with it. Now I want to record the audio from my performances. This must be such a basic question, it's crazy. VI software takes exclusive access of the audio hardware so I can't run any other audio applications. I have Ableton Live. It came with my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. It records just the midi sequence when using the plug-in for VI. I can't get it to record the audio in WAV format. If I have to, I'll attached another PC to the spdif output of the Fast Track and record that. But I think I'm missing something very simple here. What is it?

  • If VI takes exclusive use, it means that your soundcard is not multuiclient. A way round this is to use something like Total Recorder to record the output from your soundcard.

However, does your question mean that you're not loading VI as a plugin in Ableton?

  • Thanks for the reply. I'm racking my brain to find a simple way to record a WAV from Vienna Imperial. Actually, I've used TR in the past to "backup" some audio CDs. Obviously, there must be a more elegant solution. I'm loading the plugin within Ableton. Can Ableton record more than just the midi sequence or can it also record a WAV to hard disk of the output from the plugin?

  • AFAIK there are at least 3 ways to record the output in Ableton. Perhaps the easiest is Render to Disc.

  • Thank you. I think that's all I needed to know. I didn't realise that it renders a WAV file faster than real time after a midi sequence has been recorded. I was expecting it to record the audio in real time while it captured the midi. Export to audio works. Thanks again!

  • Another thing. The volume control within the VI player is being controlled by my Yamaha Clavinova. I can't seem to make it immune to the midi message that is controlling it. The volume keeps lowering to 75% and I appear to have no control. [edit] Ah, it seems to be a control change message embedded in my midi files. I would be nice to make VI immune to volume control.

  • i don´t know the GUI of vienna imperial, but the "normal" VI-players enable you to immunize against volumechanges. in the settings, you can choose if main volume is being controlled by a controller or not. by default that is turned on i guess to CC7.

  • There appears to be no option to filter the midi data received. My Clavinova instantly crashes the VI player simply by pressing the REC button on the Clavinova. The volume is set to 66% when I also press STOP on the Clavinova. It's a bit annoying as I have to constantly run to the laptop to reverse the volume change or restart VI.
