  • Problems with Windows 7 and vst instruments

I've recently bought a great new computer with an i7 975  extreme edition processor running windows 7 64 bit. I haven't had much time to play with it yet, but on the odd occasion I have I noticed that Sonar 7 and the inserted Vienna Ensemble (vst), and even Kontakt 4) aren't behaving like they used to on my previous simpler setup. I suppose it's down to some setting or other within Windows 7, but I can't find how to rectify matters.

Specifically, I insert Vienna Ensemble as a vst instrument and I can load it up as normal, but when adjusting settings etc I can't hear anything until I click on the Sonar window or minimise the VSL window. The same thing happens with Kontakt 4 which I've just installed - and it's a pain! Kontakt 4 actually locks up after a while.

Sonar's inbuilt vst synthesizers don't behave this way - it's possible to be in their activated window and get sounds to play while tweaking, without having to specifically activate the Sonar window. That's the way I assume VE should behave too - like it used to for me when running XP.

Any help, as ever, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    John

  • BUMP!

    Any ideas...anyone?

  • This sounds like a Sonar issue, not an OS issue. For example, in Cubase there is a Preference to release the ASIO driver when Cubase is not in focus. Maybe there's something similar in Sonar.

  • Many thanks DG. [:D] You were right in that it wasn't an issue with the OS. Thanks to your suggestion I looked around the menus and unchecking one that allowed the ASIO drivers to be shared by other programs did the trick.  I don't know how it got checked in the first place!

    Thanks again,

    John.

  • I think by default most DAW's have that checked.  Sibelius also by default doesn't like sharing.  Why would it share if it doesn't have to or isn't told to lol!  When it can hog up the whole system :).
