  • Request for VI Pro

    Just thought I'd make a request for the forthcoming VI Pro.  I'd love to see a way to turn down the volume of the legato samples so that when I'm working on softer, slower passages, the transitions aren't so jarring.  Also I find that some instruments just have transitions that are too loud for many contexts.  I don't know how well this could be implemented, but I think its possible and would be a worthy addition to Vienna Instruments.

    I want to echo your request strongly!

    I always felt that the legato transition sounds are one of the aspects of this library that sets it apart from all other libraries. The legato transition sounds can make a legato passage sound frighteningly real. The problem is that many of the transitions sounds are too loud. They still sound real but it sounds as if the player has a faulty technique as if he is struggling to make the transitions between notes. If you listen to a real performance especially of solo woodwinds, a fine player doesn't not make transition sounds that are as apparent as the transition sounds in VSL.

    I love the legato transition sounds and I would not like to see them changed in any way...but I would love to have a way to control the volume of the transition sounds. That single feature to me would put VSL way over the top in realism.

  • DG, yes I've used xFade before and that helps, but only a little bit.  I'd still like to have complete control over those transitions so I can tweak them towards the sound I find more realistic.

    The transitions are part of the succeeding sample, so I'm not sure how simple this would be. FWIW if you don't use velocity xFade, they will never be the correct volume, unless the succeeding note is exactly the same velocity as the preceding one. I hope that makes sense.

    I have the same perception as you. I feel that some of the legato transitions are too loud. I've come up with a number of workarounds to make the legatos sound more realistic.

    I always use xFade for legato instruments.

    Play the target note not louder the starting note.

    Increase the REL to 63

    Decrease the ATK to 45

    If I carefully remove the legato transitions that are most annoying by using the techniques below but leave the subtle ones alone, I am satisfied with the results.

    For legato transitions that I don't want to sound I use one of the following techniques to remove it.

    1.) I leave a minute gap in the midi where the transition is so that the legato transition is not triggered. If the gap is just right, the transition will still sound smooth enough to be legato but without the transition sound.

    2.) I switch to a different non-legato Patch like sustained or long portato. I find that if I perform with a legato finger technique, the transition will sound legato but without the the loud legato transition sound.

    3.) I'll change the phrasing so that the louder legato transitions are replaced with non legato phrasing. So A legato line will be broken up with staccato, portato etc segments..

    Let me know if this makes any sense to you. I admit it's a bit more work doing micro editing of the midi and finding substitute sounds.
