  • VE Pro in Pro Tools 8.04 on Mac = terrible stability

I'm running VEpro on a Mac 8 core 2009 with OS 10.62 and Pro Tools 8.04 LE and having horrible stability issues. Pro Tools will crash about every 30 minutes, often during a save or an auto save. VEpro is great because it, technically, allows me to get around Pro Tools's 32 bit memory limitations, but I certainly can't use it if it's going to be this unstable. Anyone else having success running VEpro in this way?

  • Could you please supply a crash log? Either here in the forum, or by sending it to support@vsl.co.at

    Thanks,

  • Sure...do you want a crash log for Pro Tools or for VEpro? Where can I find the crash log for VEpro?

  • HI, I use the very same setup,(other specs: 2.26ghz/16gb ram)all samples/audio on 3x internal drives.I use Play 2.0.18,Kontakt 4,Omnisphere. I had terrible trouble with my set up,pops and clicks ,white noise bursts and crashes galore so I did some research and I also had a pro audio crowd work on my system for a few hours, they updated to the latest version of Ve Pro,Protools 8.4 and OSX. In Ve Pro (32bit)server preferences I set the multiprocessing to 8 threads (since I am only using one instance of Ve Pro)no slaves. Play is set to '512' voices and engine level set to 'low',|Protools playback engine is set to 512 and 7 processors(or 'threads')and 99%cpu usage. Its only been a day but so far the difference is like night and day,its running great so far with no pops clicks, crashes,as I said its early days but so far so good, hope this helps. Dean.

  • Thanks Dean for that help. We actually have the same Mac Pro, so this is a solid direction. Just to clarify - you upgraded to 10.6.4, even though Pro Tools 8 is not qualified for 10.6.4 yet? And are you using VSL server 32 bit exclusively? I've been using only the 64 bit version. Perhaps this is part of my problem?

  • I decided to go ahead and I had my setup updated by a pro audio crowd,I use both Ve pro 32 bit (for Play )and Ve Pro 64bit (for Kontakt,Omnisphere). I have allocated 4 threads for both Ve Pro instances ,the rest is for Protools and OSX. The only problem I have is still with Play in 32 bit instance,I hear a little click, the audio stops then hangs and crashes, but the 64bit instance with Kontakt and Omnisphere seems very stable.

  • What ended up doing the trick is de-coupling all of my VEpro instances. WIthout Pro Tools having to keep track of all that data, stability went way up. Now I have to somehow resolve the random, intermittent CPU spikes I seem to be getting from running more then 2 or 3 instances of VEpro.

  • HI, thats exactly what I did aswell,I save the viframes then decouple Ve Pro and Protools runs much better,I can load the Ve Pro instances manually PLay in 32bit first then Kontakt in 64bit. Have you allocted threads in Ve Pro?4 threads for two intances or 8 for one?

  • Hi,

if you could send me crash logs from both ProTools and VEPro, it would be the best. But since you say that ProTools is the one crashing, the ProTools crashlog would be most interesting.

    Find the logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/

    Thanks,
