  • Upsampling

Hi there. I need a professional opinion. Maybe from Dietz? :)

Afaik the VSL libraries are 44.1kHz/24bit. I use Cubase and/or MIR.
Now: During the mix (not mastering, this is about the upsampling) is it better to work in a 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz environment? Or is there no significant difference?

    Thanks for any opinion!

  • There _will_ be a difference between 88.2 and 96 kHz, but it will be negligible in comparison to the difference between the actual upsampling algorithms - a difference which again will be much smaller than the ones between downsampling algorithms.

In a nutshell: It's very unlikely that the decision between 88.2 or 96 will make or break you mix :-)

    Kind regards,

  • thanks for the quick answer.
there are million answers in the internet but none of them can say which is better. now from the the MIR and VSLs point of view: would you say 88.2 is better or worst? better to have it x2 or is it also ok to have x2.18?

  • Assuming that your DAW uses a modern upsampling method, it shouldn't make any noticeable difference, if you ask me.

... but then, I'm not exactly known for my believe in audio esoterica ;-)

  • Oh, BTW - just to avoid any confusion: As you most certainly know, MIR works with a fixed sampling rate of 44.1 kHz in any case. You will have to convert its output if you plan to work with other sampling rates.
