  • Konzerthaus Organ as a "live" instrument

I think of buying the Konzerthaus Organ, but the only way it might be useful for me would be to play live. Is it playable? I have Korg NanoKontrol (very interesting and cheap piece of hardware) that can send Control Change MIDI messages. Can KO be configured in such a way I could press a button (send say CC 01 127 and activate one of the stops?

  • Hello Kamczak

    Yes it is live playable...

I recommend to buy the new VIPro-Player as well.

You can switch between the matrices with the order "midi program change" with VIPro.

If you just use the first cell* A1 of all the matrices you can select 128 different sounds this way.

    *How to create different sounds?

Each cell is able to hold up to 8 different articulations... stops in your case.

This means: You can create 128 different sounds by combining different stops within each cell.

    And a final remark:

Each stop only uses its place in the RAM once - even when you need it in other matrices/cells once more.

Maybe it all sounds a bit complicated.

But it's easy to create several Organ sounds with VIPro and select them afterwards

  • Sounds strange. It requires to

    1. buy additional software to be playable
    2. pre-set sets of stops

I know you're concerned by very different instruments and trying to find a universal way to control them, but in case of organ the Hauptwerk's idea seems to be much more natural. I reckon it's not possible to use VSL Organ in Hauptwerk engine...

Oh, and one more thing. As I have a organ midi-controller (2 keyboards and set of pedals), it sends midi notes in 3 different channels. Can they be assigned to various stops?

    Hello again

1./2. In case of playing the organ live I recommend the Vienna Instrument Pro Player, yes.

That's for preparing several collections of "stop combinations" and selecting them by a midi program change.

If you have 2 Keyboards and a Basspedal you also need to use a DAW-Software for opening 3 VIPro instances.

They can be organized within the DAW so that they can be played with separated keyboards / midi channels.

Another possibility is that you are going to use the Vienna Ensemble Pro which is a host for Vienna (Pro) Players.

    It replaces the DAW.

The VSL Organ is organized as all the other samples are. So the use of the organ is the same which you have with the strings, the brass etc.

This means, the VSL-Organ itself with its common VI-Player is more prepared for the use inside a DAW-Project.

Nevertheless: It is not a problem to play the Konzerthaus Organ live and this in a "handy way" - with some additions (VIPro and VE for several Keyboards).

I will publish a short tutorial on my website within the next days which will show the possibilities and the use of VIPro for this situation.

Of course, you are right: The Hauptwerk is directly developed for playing Organs live.

  •  There is also the fact that many commonly used registrations are sampled separate from indvidual stops, so you do not have to combine five different instruments to get one sound.  Most organists would like very much those registrations.

Also in general, if you want to make every single stop sound separately, you can by assigning keyswitches.  Since you are playing live, you can in advance set up whatever stop combinations that you will need based on the pieces that will be played.  No organist needs every single stop instantly at every moment.  Especially of a gigantic organ like this one.  So it can be arranged in advance, with "registrations" that are done digitally. This can easily be done with keyswitching between cells. You have possible on one cell instant switching between 12, 24, 36, 48 and so on separate stops depending on how many vertical cells you set up.  It is very easy to do this, and makes perfect sense once you start doing it.  This is in reference to using the Vienna Ensemble basic player, not additional software that is needed.

  • Thanks! One more question: what do I lose by not using the VIPro-Player, but the freeware one?

    Hello

    VI instead of VIPro

    1. The main feature "combining several articulations (stops)"  within one cell is'nt available with the common VI.

You only can combine two Stops within one cell of the VI.

    2. You are not able to select the matrices with midi-program-changes

    VE instead of VEPro

No problem to host 5 VIPros for the orgen - (my example above) but...

    ...only available in VEPro

    - MIDI and audio over LAN (for using the software/samples of up to three different computers in the mean time)
    - 3rd party plugin hosting (effects and instruments)
    - global learn/optimize/reset for vi/vipro
    - master tuning for vi/vipro
    - channel parameter automation from plugin
    - preserved instances or metaframes
    - hardware audio input in standalone
