Hi VSL folks,

It is obvious that VSL software and samples are the world leaders for orchestral simulation by a long shot. I wonder when a string/woodwind/brass/percussion extended techniques sample library will be available to include so many of the 'new music' techniques used in recent years. Multiphonics, behind the bridge bowing (strings), slap tonguing (woodwind) etc etc etc etc.

Any exciting news to deliver about this?

Cheers

Leif

Every now and then this kind of request pops up, hopefully we'll get lucky someday. If only these techniques were useful in trailers...

Yes... this would be lovely and support work that pushes the timbral boundaries. One would hope for a rich variety of single instruments, or small groupings, to allow for a compositional hand in organizing them. Strings would be the place to start, imho, given the rich possibilities provided by the bowed, plucked, struck, rubbed, etc. string.

Yes, good point on the single instruments/small groupings idea. Some techniques require multiple performers, but I would hope that VSL would make the library in such a way that we have control over the details, and don't just get some kind of "FX" package, with all the Hollywood cliches pre-programmed/performed in. The potential of these techniques, particularly via combinations of different instruments (and also combined with conventional technicques) is immense. It shouldn't be arbitrarily reduced to what we already know by "pre-composing" (as other libraries have done).

Absolutely! I've been experimenting
(with great success) with the new dimensions strings and getting some
beautiful, original and realistic effects. Unfortunately it's quite
limited in the types of fx I can create.  Glissandos up or down,
not both or continuous. Col legno and pizzicatos are quite good
(especially mixed with snaps). But I'm definitely missing some
scratches, hits on the body, etc. Mind you, the harmonics glissandi
sound quite real controlled with the pitch wheel.

Certainly some aggressive glissandi
would be very welcome! But many of us are still even waiting on a
simple sustain vibrato patch for the clarinet.... And that's been years of request.
