  • Finale and VSL

    Hello everyone!

    I would love to make my VSL instruments work with Finale. I downloaded the Finale file + instructions from the vsl website, but for some reason, i can't get it working. Finale keeps playing the GM sounds even though I define the same MIDI channels for Finale and Vienna Ensemble.

    I guess I need some more braincells and/or your help!

    thanks a lot

  • Jazmin,

    Sounds like you have "play thru midi" checked. I'm not using a IAC bus,  I have "Play thru VST" (or Audio Units if on a Mac) selected. Download the Vienna Ensemble and load that into the slot for Finale Midi setup channels 1-16. Within Vienna Ensemble load your patches/matrices. I haven't gotten around to working with percussion staves yet, since FInale's perc. system leaves a bit to be desired. Make sure you've downloaded the Finale file with the VSL HP preferences. Hope this helps a little.

  • Thanks for your quick resonse JET!

    You are right, I did try to "play through MIDI". Now I tried it your way but unfortunately, my Vienna Ensemble doesn't appear as an option to use in the MIDI/Audio Setups of Finale. Maybe my Finale 2008 is too old?

  • Finale 2008 only worked with the Native Instruments interface. Finale versions since then work with any VST.

  • oh that's really unfortunate... :(

    thanks for your help though!!

  • There might be a way to route it through the IAC bus in Finale 2008, but that's not my area of expertise. Good luck.

  • Jazzmin,

    You've got the IAC Bus routed to "Input" on Finale, it should be the "Output"!  Think about it, you want the midi notes from Finale to go OUT the IAC Bus and then the IAC Bus goes MIDI IN to VI.  Howver, there's no need to use the IAC Bus at all.

    1) Select MIDI/Audio -> Play Finale through Audio Units

    2) MIDI/Audio -> Device Setup -> Manage AU Plug-ins

    -Make sure "VSL: Vienna Instruments" is listed under "Active Plug-ins"

    3) MIDI/Audio -> Instrument Setup -> Audio Unit Instruments

    Make sure "VSL: Vienna Instruments" is listed for each midi channel that you're using under the "Instrument" category.

    Hope this helps, if not, then you're on your own.

    -Brian
