  • My first mixing

Hallo, since 10 Month I learn to work with vsl Instruments. In the last week I finished my first real peace for a diabolo juggler. I work with logic pro and vienna Instruments pro. At the mixing I had problems to get a clear and bright orchestra sound. Is there somebody who knows a video teaching about mixing or presets? On this youtube-link you can listen and watch the juggling together with my music. I am open for your reviews and tips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_LIj_4tzcg Thank you Markus

  •  Just watched the video, unfortunately I spent too much time watching the diabolo antics, and forget to concentrate on the music, but I did wonder, was the music put to the video or was the act performed to that sound track?

  • Hi, The Juggler performed on a different music. I is techno music from the 90th. He use it normally on stage since 15 years. For a german variety show with "classical" theme, he asked me if is possible to arrange it for orchestra. I took some themes from it, but the most part is only beat. So I wrote 80% new music. And...the music has to be in the background. I put also a little bit applause in, to fill the holes between the parts.

  • Hallo Markus

Congratulation, nice music which is well syncronized to the diabolo.

    You are asking for tips...

For the moment your orchestra seems to play a bit on one line from the left to the right

There are three dimensions which you should take into account for a mix:

    • 1. Left - Right
    • 2. Close - Far (depth)
    • 3. Frequencies

Point 1 is done / Point 2 could be more enhanced / Point 3 could be more enhanced

    How to solve point 2?

Try to create more different depths so that instruments are behind others (example: winds farther away than strings, the piano just in front etc.)

    How to solve point 3?

Try to cut high frequencies for instruments which are farther away until they sound natural in the context.

    Good luck

    Beat

PS. A good start could be that you draw first the virtual stage of your orchestra (bird perspective).

Place each musician or ensemble on it and try then to reach acoustically the positions of the musicians  and ensembles.

  • Hallo Beat, thank you a lot. I just tried it to bring the winds behind the strings, but I think I did it a little to less. Of course I was unsure what I have to do. I watched the Video about Vienna mir and I think there is the bird perspective witch you mean. Until now I am more musician than technician and my biggest trouble is to cut the high frequencies in the right way. Are there any rules with witch I can start a mix? greetings Markus

    Hello Markus

The aim could be this: Stage Orchestra gif (possible layout)

When you are using a reverb you can observe that a signal seems to be farther away the more "wet" the signal is (ratio "dry/wet").

Nevertheless, it is important, not to have a too muddy mix because of the reverb.

    Try the following:

Route the Strings through a reverb of your choice. This reverb could be in a BUS if you are using (logic).

Make sure, that the strings not sound too muddy (with too much reverb) but so that you get a "nice room" for this section.

Prepare another BUS now for routing all Woodwinds through it. Copy the Reverb (incl. its settings) of the first BUS into the BUS  (Woodwinds) now.

Open the parameters and increase the ratio "dry/wet" a bit more to wet. Maybe you can enhance the depth by change the "PreDelay" a bit (as a rule: not higher than 50ms).

Repeat the process for the Brass as well and encrease the wet even more.

If this work is done install an EQ before or after the reverbs of BUS 2 and 3.

Play the winds and cut the high frequencies until they seem to fit to the larger distance.

This process will support the deeper depth for the winds with the "more-reverb" .

Do the same for the Brass-BUS as well.

Attention: The differences from BUS to BUS can be tiny for getting different depths.

Your Mixer could be like this after routing and installing all the effects: Logic_Mixer.gif

    A lot of success

    Beat

  • Hi Beat, Thanks a lot. Your tips helps. I didn´t had the idea with the Bus. I think this was a big step forward for me. Until now I use only the plugins from logic, but I read that "Mir pro" will be release this year. I hope this program and plugins will help me in the future. And, by the way, thank you for the friendly review of my music:-) Markus

  • Hallo, the varietyartist bat me, to remove my musicvideo from youtube. I put the composition now on this site: http://www.schimpp.de/html/diabolo.mp4.html If somebody is interested. I mute the video and compose only with vsl Instruments on it. Enjoy! Markus Mac Book Pro Yamaha CS 6 vsl spezial edition & Plus Appassionato Strings Vienna Imperial

A strange request on his part, you had just given him the greatest exposure and biggest public promotion an artist could ever ask for.
