  • Help! VE Pro, Kontakt 3.5 and Mac Power PC Question

Hello. I have an Apple G5 Dual 2.3GHz Power PC (Early 2005 edition) in OS 10.5.8 as a slave computer for Vienna. It has 4.5GB RAM. I am thinking of upgrading it to 8GB RAM because it can still run Kontakt 3.5 in the Vienna host. Before I spend the money to upgrade the RAM, does anyone know if the fact that VE Pro cannot address 8GB in 32 bit Server mode will get in the way of Kontakt 3.5 addressing all 8GB RAM, since contact is being used not as standalone, but inside the VE Pro host? According to Native Instruments, Kontakt 3.5 apparently works the same way both in standalone mode and inside the Vienna host, and in fact, is able to address all 8GB RAM in my system despite the fact that VE Pro in 32 bit mode cannot. Can anyone confirm first, if Kontakt's Memory Server mode can work on a Power PC and second, if within the VE Pro host, I can actually still take advantage of my extra RAM via Kontakt.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

    Hi ,

I have 16GB RAM installed and I have a permanent K35 setup  inside VEPRO , which uses some 8GB loaded into Kontakt's memory Server .

( See the specs of my G5  below in my signature )

Concerning the 32bit RAM Limit :

Whenever you open an VEPRO instances ( which then will host one or more Kontakt's ) the VEPRO Server eats up more and more RAM ,

like a DAW when you open PlugIns .

So you just have to take care that the VEPRO 32bit Server itself won't get to close to 3GB (or something around that ... ) .

In my setup I have 9 instances of VEPRO inside the VEPRO 32bit Server , hosting 12 Kontakts .

The more Audiochannels you stream to your Master , the harder it will be for the G5 .

So plan your setup beforehand , always keeping in mind : Less is more (  ... less instances , less AudioChannels .... ) .

    Hope that helps

    Best

  • Gerd,

Thank you for the fast reply. Looks like you have the G5 2.3GHz that came out late 2005. Mine maxes out at 8GB. However, I am clear on some things. On others, no. For example, I have 4.5GB RAM installed. When I launch Kontakt 3.5 in VE Pro, in the memory page of Kontakt, it says that the maximum RAM it can use out of the 4.5GB is 3.0GB. So since you have 16GB of RAM, how much RAM does Kontakt report is available for use on your system? So my question is, now that Kontakt 3.5 is telling me it can only use 3GB of my 4.5GB RAM, will that amount available for use increase from 3GB to a higher number once I install more RAM on my G5?

Thanks for your time and insight,

    Niyi

  • Hi Niyi ,

actually now - when I read again your specs - I remember that some former Mac models ( like your one and later for example the first generation IntelMac ) had a complete 32bit architecture , while other PPC Models  had a 64bit architecture under the hood .

And as far as I remember on the 32bit architectured Macs the tricks of the various MemoryServers (Kontakt/EastWest/...) didn't work,

and so Kontakt3.5  MemoryServer would  indeed be  limited by the 32bit to 2,0 - 3GB RAM on your PPC Model.

But , I'm not sure if this is all 100% true what I wrote .

So , hmm , I must admit that I do not know the answer to your riddle.

However , your Mac will perform better with more RAM , because the system has more headroom to operate .

  • Gerd,

Thanks again for the informative feedback. My PCI slots are rated as 64 Bit, but I guess that does not necessarily mean that is has 64 bit architecture under the hood. Yeah, so I guess I'm stuck, unless anyone else has any insight. I am not in a position to spend money on RAM unless I can actually take full advantage of it in my composing scenario. I appreciate the time spent advising me.

Let me know if any other thoughts come up.

    Best,

    Niyi
