  • pops and clicks

OK, after much confusion and idiocy on my part (!) I have my system up and running. Quick overview:

    two Mac Pro's

    1 8 core 2.4 16 gig ram SL 10.6.6 Pro Tools 9 HD 3 accel

    1 4  core 2.66 9 gig ram SL 10.6.6 VEPro 4.1.7553 Apogee Rosetta 800 Ensemble 32 PCIe

All systems run as expected, except I'm getting pops and after looking more closely at the wave files, I think they're actually dropouts. You can see the wave actually broken! Anyway, the pops only appear on the ethernet busses, even if I'm only running 1 stereo track into PT. Now, if I midi from the 8 core to the 4 core, and run all four stereo tracks out of the Rosetta 800 simultaneously, it's clean as a whistle. It has to be about the Ethernet buss. I'm running them direct out of port 2 on both with static IPs and no router using a brand new 4' Cat 6e cable. How can I get rid of these pops and/or dropouts? Tried changing the buffer to 2, but it didn't seem to help. Thoughts anyone?

  • I too am having a lot of drop outs and static in my set up  (Mac G5 VEP  - PC running 64 bit W7 VEP Server)

VSL - what is the best way to run ethernet between two machines?  Right now I have the Cat5 cables running into a router and on the same system as my online cables.

Should I be running a cable straight from one machine to the next or does it matter?

  • Also have noticed a big increase in drop outs and static since updating to the latest version of VEPRO (yes I have the same version on all machines.)

Thinking of going back to the previous version, but am not sure that is the problem.

Commenting on the ethernet best practices sure would help...

    Thanks,

    arapahoe

Make sure that you have disabled the second Ethernet port on your machine and that any Wi-Fi is also disabled. if you still get the problems, then you know that neither of these things are causing it.

  • The best way should be a direct cable between the machines, or a dedicated gigabit switch.

Does your current router have gigabit ports?

  • My original post states that it is indeed a direct connection using ethernet port 2 of both machines and a brand new cat 6e cable.

My reply was for araphoe, sorry.

In your case, I cannot really say what is happening.

    • Is your Airport disabled on both machines? It is known to cause interruptions for the physical ethernet ports.
    • What are your network addresses for your ethernet ports?
    • Perhaps try using Ethernet port 1 on both macs for VE, and port 2 for other networking (I don't know if there are any priorities between the ports, but could be worth a try)

  • I've founde the same increase on "pops and clicks" istalling the latest (4.1.7644) update (on both machines). I also have 1gb straight connection, both PC.

I found that I had a number of performance issues I didn't expect when I was using dynamic IP. With fixed IP I'm getting excellent performance with low latency on my two macpro network, for several VE Pro builds now.

  • Well, I was hoping for more help from the Vienna people. This company and product is too high end and well known to have this happening to so many people with no real solutions. I am direct connected, and I have assigned fixed IP's on both systems. Airport is disabled, systems are loaded with ram. There is absolutely no reason for this to be happening on this system. I've put 10,000.00 dollars and 2 months of downtime into getting it running efficiently, and I have many high profile projects coming up. I need this system running right soon. Any help would be appreciated. I want to buy more of the library, but with this happening, I'm forced to wait till it's working as advertised. Thanks.
