  • muted Trumpets

In the Special Edition, the trumpets are playing harmon mutes. I'm not sure why harmons were chosen, but personally I think it was a bad choice. It should have been straight mutes.

In the Brass I DVD, can anyone tell me what kind of mutes the trumpets are playing there?

    Thanks, JET

  • Where did you read that in the SE Trumpets, the mutes are Harmon. I’m quite sure they are straight.

  • I assure you they are harmons - in Special Edition, Download and the DVD Collections. There are NO other mutes recorded.

  • There was another thread not so long ago about this. In all of VSL you’ll hear only straight mutes. The Brass I library in the same samples as the Special Editions. Have a listen to the demos. You won’t hear any harmon mutes (which are’t used to my knowledge in classical music, but very common in Jazz).

  • Sorry, but I have the Special Edition, and it definitely are Harmon mutes! I know, that the common mute for classical music is the straight mute, and this is the reason nobody understands why they only recorded the harmon.

  • Oops, my bad. Those are harmon mutes. And it’s the same for the big Brass I library (which I own). Too bad

  • Thank you for the clarification. I was specifically thinking about buying the Brass dvd if straight mutes were included. This mute choice makes no sense to me.

  • I love VSL dearly but lots have people have been waiting a long time for them to get their act together with brass mutes. They so need to issue a muted brass set with straight mutes for all and additional mutes for trumpets and trombones. No Horn mute is a thorn in their side.

  • I'm getting the feeling that this was a marketing decision. I wouldn't be surprised if they release a muted brass library someday with all of the mute choices. When in reality, if they included a straight mute initially with the brass library, that would have taken care of 90% of the user's needs.

  • I’ve still very surprised at my "discovery". I haven’t use VSL brass in a long while, but have recently bought the Complete Brass I library. I had always taken for granted that the mutes were "straights" since it was designed (at least I thought) for classical).

So all the demos we’ve been hearing for years are actually using the wrong mutes (not the one’s indicated by the composers).

This libraries date back several year, and I have the impression that if VSL planned on completing the brass instruments with mutes, they would have done that already. And they've recently released Dimention Brass, so if we see mutes, it will probably be in the Dimention line.

    I’m very disappointed! [:(]

  • It's very strange that with so many brass collections (5 or more?) there isn't a single straight mute in the thousands and thousands of samples produced by VSL.
