    I don't know, it would depend on what you use your computers for; many times in my life I have judged women by the size of their petaflops and I have never regretted it... [;)]

    Personally I'm still waiting for a HAL 9000 to come true ... would be sooooo awesome to say "Hey HAL .. do me a favour and boot up Logic 9 for me .. load up all the sh*t I was working on yesterday .. oooh ooooh .. did I get any email? .. and do I have something stuck in my teeth?".

    Yep when computers get THAT good .. I think the worlds populous will diminish as males everywhere will prefer the company of their PC. (Like they don't already :P) Come on no .. admit it .. anyone who's tried the 'speakable items' on a MAc knows that strange chill of being able to 'talk' to your computer .. not just sitting there and using it. Of course the effect is lessened when your screaming "WHAT IS THE TIME!?!" about 25 times and the computer refuses to do anything .. but you know one day .. One supremely cool day .. it'll only take asking that once, to get the answer.

    Yeah I working late .. running on decaf and 4 weeks left to score 30 minutes of film ..ahhghh! .. What happened to the days when I had time to do the podcast. (By the way I moved to Vancouver, Canada, so the podcast is again delayed. To those that care I do intend to pick it up again soon.)

    There is a new commission out for an opera regarding the life and times of Anne-Nicole Smith. For those in the know it was easy enough to guess who the composer would be (Turnage). I thought this was the appropriate thread to announce this piece of news; you see? Who said the subject of large b...... (for what else is there in this case) is low-brow and incompatible with creation of high art?......

    What i'd REALLY like is a button that pops up next to the 'Ok' button when something goes wrong. So when that terrible warning pops up saying 'Everything s f**ked up! Sorry champ but you lost all the stuff you were doing .. I was to busy doing other stuff to care!' .. (Somehow it'd seem more honest if that was the error message), and then you see the 'Click Ok to continue" .. and you so desperately want another option 'cos you're pissed at loosing all your stuff.

    I want a 'No! it's NOT okay you sonuvabitch!' button. I guess the button wouldn't actually do anything different, but it'd feel great if the computer would at least pretend to be 'Modifying your HD to not screw up as often'.

    As for Unix ... Gah!  .. that's proof of alien intelligence .. cos if any human is actually happy to use command lines to do everything that's just too ghastly to contemplate.

    What was point of this thread again? ... oh yeah computers!. I still love my Mac. Despite any shortcomings it's an awesome thing.

    The GUI and operation systems could often be much better by changing just minor parts.

    As you said, sometimes it would be more fair to have a message "Don´t know what happened, sorry you have to reboot". A good example is the Microsoft pop up " Do you want to send this error to Microsoft ?". Did this ever have any consequence ?

    On the other hand I don´t want to talk bad about the Windows OS, since Windows XP I think overall it works really fine, seldom that I had severe issues with it.

    The point is more the programming in detail.

    Why do Flash and Acrobat reader need 2 minutes to install complex updates on a requently basis for an application to display text !?

    And even after 250 updates adobe still freezes the whole browser, when unable to dowlnload the complede pdf file.

    Same for Kontakt : Why does it take so long to load sample libraries and why is the overview so confusing? That is really a major point for me to use Vienna instruments, because loading times are faster and it is easier to find the instruments you need in the brower.

    As it comes to Unix, I´m not completely against it. What Microsoft and Apple can learn form it IMO is the speed and pureness how applications are run. I´m using it in the company for some special tasks on computers, that are now totally outdated judging by processor speed ( 10 years old ultra spark....), but when you open a window it just plops up instantly under your finger on the mouse button. No lags, no waiting, just wonderful performance.

    And this is not a primary question of how many MB/s  the southbridge or HD controller can handle....

    But when you have a problem with its hard- or software ........total desaster unless you are a hardcore Unix user or better admin.

    Sometimes even the big companies don´t understand their own Unix implementations. KLA Tencor is a nice example. Back in the 90´s they created a highly proprietary high end server system. Although having migrated to more modern environments, the source code and data transfer still rely on the original implementation.

    Stories are told, that there was only ONE guy who did the whole setup and programming for these systems. When he found out, that his wife betrayed him with another lover, both men were killed after a car chase on the highway.

    The WHOLE software documentation for the server concept was in this car.

    He had a backup of the files at home, but when his wife was informed that both men died in a car accicdent, she set their home on fire and everything burned down.

    It is told, that KLA still is relying on only loose parts and fractions of documentations and only very few guys hardly understand what´s going on under the hood in these computers.[:O]

    For me this is a perfect example : When it is too complicated, you run into problems in the long run.

    Keep it simple - and don´t let your girldfriend get mad at you.....
