  • Vienna articulations in Logic

Hello, I am a newbie at this so here's my question: When I input a midi track in Logic 9 using one of the vienna instruments, I wanted to know if there is a way to change the articulations of some of the midi notes after I have inputted them. So say I forgot to switch the controller to hear a staccato note, and now all I hear is a legato note, is there a way to change it within logic without having to re-record it? I am using Logic 9 and have the Vienna special edition (standard). Thanks! Nicky

  • I'm not sure I understand your question but are you programming your keyswitches in the piano roll (I don't use Logic so I'm not sure what's it's called)?  If C3 is say a staccato articulation then put a 32nd ntoe on C3 just before you want the staccato articulation to happen.  Does that make sense?

  • Thanks for your response.I realize that I could just drag the midi note to make it shorter, but what I am trying to say is if I input it say all as legato, but then there is one note that I want the articulation dĂ©tachĂ©, is there a way to change it to that articulation without having to re-record it? Does that make sense. Thanks, Nicky

    Hello Nicky,

if you have the articulation you need available in your Vienna Instruments, you can always switch to it. MIDI is MIDI to Vienna Instruments, it doesn´t matter if it is played live or by the sequencer.

And as the sequencer lets you edit every MIDI event, you have total freedom there!

Did you find the Vienna Instruments Video Tutorials already?

  • Thanks Paul. I have checked out around half of those videos. So basically if I select a midi note in Logic and then select a different articulation in the Vienna sequencer it will change it within Logic for good? I will give that a try. Many thanks, Nicky

  • Hello Nicky,

well, not really. You define how you want to SWITCH between different articulations IN Vienna Instruments (CC, Speed, Velocity, Keyswitch....). These controlers are then used to switch between articulations, be it live or in your sequencer.

If you "just" switch articulations in Vienna Instruments, this changes the articulations, BUT it is not recorded anywhere.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Okay, gotcha. Yeah, that's what I was wondering about whether or not I could change it after the fact. Guess not. Thanks for your responses. Best, Nicky

  • Nicky,

You're misunderstanding. Of course you can change it. Just make sure that you have whatever articuations you want to use loaded into the matrix, then it's up to you to decide how to switch between the articulations. You can assign a keyswitch note, then insert that note into Logic's piano roll. Or you can assign the articulation change to a CC controller, then draw in the automation that will trigger it. It's all up to you how you want it to work.

Personally, I don't usually use more than 3 articulations in a matrix. I like to assign these a CC controller to switch between them.

  • Paul, I write in Finale, then export a midi file which I then open in Logic and play using Vienna. If I've input all articulations and legato markings in Finale, will Vienna play them back without me having to add or edit key switch data? Is there a notation software that works better with VI in this respect. I don't want to spend the kind of time I have been tweeking. -C

  • Hello Stephen!

Let me chime in here. If you export a MIDI file, all articulation changes according to your Human Playback settings will be included as MIDI commands. So if you start a project in Finale and want to switch to Logic for optimizing your playback results, do as follows:
1.) If you haven't done so before, import and activate the Special Edition Human Playback Preferences with Finale. They can be downloaded here:
    http://www.vsl.co.at/en/68/141/460/1603/1290.htm
2.) Export a MIDI file (Type 1) with Finale.
3.) Save your settings in Vienna Ensemble as a VIFrame.
4.) Open Logic and import the MIDI file.
5.) Assign Vienna Ensemble and load the VIFrame you saved before.

    Best regards,
    Andi
