  • No VST Support inside VE-pro on mac?

    Hello,

I'm looking into switching to Cubase 6 for mac, and was excited about the possibility of using VST's as I feel VST's are a much better plugin format than AU (VST's send midi in/out of all plugins, VST's are not limited to 16 midi channels, etc). This excited me about VE pro, as I currently have to load 20+ VE pro servers in order to access all my instruments due to the limitations of 16 midi channels per AU.  VST does not have this limitation, yet it seems that I cannot use VST on a mac in VE pro? BUMMER!!

Any idea if VST for mac will be supported? I'm no coder, but is it really that different the VST format for PC vs Mac?

    Thanks!

  •  Hi JT3_Jon

is this what you are looking for (it's one of the new features of VE PRO 4.1.7864 which are listed in the VE PRO changelog)

"OS X VST: Added server interface plug-in Cocoa interface for VST 64-bit":

    best

  • HI Herb!!

I dont think thats what I'm looking for. What I was actually hoping to do was load the VST version of Kontakt in VE pro, which should allow me to access more than the current 16midi channel limitation of AU's, as VST actually have "ports," each with their own 16 midi channels.

It is my understanding reading the forums here that though VE-pro will open as a VST in Cubase, the plugins INSIDE VE-Pro must be AU's, and you cannot run VST's inside VE pro. Seems odd to me, as you have full VST support on a PC, so maybe I'm wrong here? All I know is I only see the ability to load AU's Inside VE pro Standalone. :(

Surely as long as the connector is VST3 you would still be able to use more than one MIDI port? Is this not the case?

The reason that there is full VST support in Windows is that it is the standard.Remember that there didn't use to be RTAS on Windows either.

  • Whoa this is bad news since I just switch completely to mac and expected VST to work as always.  This just slapped me in the face.  Now I have no windows system and all of my work done in VST format? Any way  of making VE Pro intelligent enough to load the presets in any format availiable?

  • This is technically not possible to do for third party plugins, however all VSL plugins will load correctly between platforms.

  • So no plans for VST support in OSX?

  •  Any chance of support VST3 in OSX?  I have some VST3 specific features that I can't take advantage of.

  • Also, some plugins are VST only.

  • Checkin in again on whether any considering is given for VST support in Mac OSX.  Would like the flexibility to load projects (with 3rd party VSTi synths) between Mac and Windows environments.

  • We have considered it, but it's impossible to give an estimate at this point as to if and when this will happen unfortunately. I hope you understand.

  • I would add my +1 to having VST plugin support inside of VE Pro on OS X. I live in a Bi-OS world and have to recreate mframes instrument, by instrument sometimes when I need to go back and forth. It would be loverly to be able to open an mframe file on either platform!

Right, you can't load a VST plugin in VE Pro on Mac OS. This has nothing to do with the multiple ports that VE Pro as VST3 provide for Cubase. Cubase does not have the AU limitation & Kontakt is not what determines the number of ports available to Cubase.

VE Pro supplies the ports and channels to Kontakt or other instrument hosted in it. These are not the source of ports.

  • Seconded, I think it's borderline shady the way Vienna advertises their product as hosting both VST and AU on both platforms, yet they don't specify anywhere that it's exclusively AU for the Mac. There are a lot of plugs that are VST only, so this would be a logical move on their part.

Maybe I am missing something here, and if I do so I apologize !

But as far I can understand from the above, we're talking about instrument plugins, not fx plugins, right ?

    1) The Product Info Page says :

"Vienna Ensemble PRO 5 is a cross-platform MIDI and audio LAN solution that works universally on Macs and PCs, hosting Vienna Instruments as well as third-party 64-bit and 32-bit VSTi/AU plug-ins. "

Does not say that it will be only AU on Mac or only VST on PC, and the phrase "works universally on Macs and PCs" - mentioned separately from the claim that it is cross-platform - clearly suggests the software will "do the same" on both platforms. It also specifically claims support for third-party plugins, from either AU or VSTi type.

    2) The Product Comparison Page says :

    3rd party plug-in hosting (VSTi/AU)

    •

    •

    Inserts for FX plug-ins (AU/Mac, VST/PC)

    •

    •

    •

This info contradicts / nuances / reduces the claims made in the first page, in the sense that FX plug-ins (and only those !) will only be supported as a AU version on the Mac , a VST version on PC.

However, for third-party Instrument Plugins, no such distinction/limitation is mentioned at all. It actually reinforces the information in the previous page by clearly stating "VSTi/AU", without any reference to a platform whatsover.

    3) The Product Features Page completely confirms the info in the Product Info Page , and (even) does not mention the FX plug-in difference.

    Conclusion :

From this information, there can only be some doubt about FX plug-in functionality. A prudent reader/potential customer would assume the worst case (platform dependent).

For Instrument Plugins , the case is clear however : Both VSTi and AU formats are (/or should be) supported on Mac and PC platform.

If that's not the case - haven't tried it myself, but certainly will in the near future - the product information provided is completely misleading.

That doesn't make VEPro a bad product - and it surely isn't - but if you're looking for this kind of functionality, you will be convinced the software does provide it, and there is no way to infer the opposite from the information provided ...

I assume most of us would prefer VSL to supply the promised functionality, meanwhile however, the least they should do is to provide complete, correct and unambiguous information to their (potential) customers. my 2c
