  • Brass Questions...

I have Brass/Woodwinds on order as of today, so forgive my ignorance if this question is alread solved.

I get hired to do a lot of Broadway musical soundalikes. In trying to do these scores, the brass sections just kill you. The "big band" kind of stuff....the shakes, and slides...murder. I have the Quantum Leap brass, but it doesn't really cover things extensively though it was a start.

I'm wondering if VSL either has, or will have, the ability to realize scores like this....think of all the typical brass things you hear in a swing, big band style thing.

Thanks, and as a new user and new member of the forum, I can say I'm just really impressed with the detail and the sound of this library. Little things like the dimuendo samples are tools that just haven't ever been out there. It will definitely take my work to a whole new level as it does for all of us. Amazing stuff. Just hope I can learn to use Performance Tool quickly enough to keep my deadlines[;)]

  • No shakes falls or anything jazzy is yet included in vsl. you should have gotten the performance set also though. The legato patches work much better for runs etc than do normal patches.

I know vsl is planning a Bb trumpet that may include jazz oriented playing. The vsl trumpet right now is great for soft passages but not great for big brassy stuff. (IMHO) I hope the Bb trumpet will help with this.

Sam trumpets has some intresting stuff. I know it has mutes which sounded better on the demo than quantum leap brass. VSL is supposed to be coming out with muted samples eventualy. I do hope they have legato muted patches as well. Thats one thing with muted patches -- there's always that very harsh ping that is very distinctive. Anyway hope that helps.

  • No, it's not possible today, but they are planning on expanding the articulation set to include jazz, modern or contemporary articulations or what you prefer to call them not to mention mutes. I'm definitely waiting for this to happen.

Like you I often get hired to do musicals and I've resorted to live players when it comes to big band style brass (and mutes which they seem to love in musicals). I haven't been able to get the bite or expression from any library I have including VSL, QLB and some smaller brass libraries. Maybe it's doable, but right now it takes too much time IMO to be economically interesting.

Thanks...I have ordered the Performance set as well.

I just think there is a huge need for big band brass capability out there. No one has addressed it. I'll check out SAM Horns as well....thanks!

Thanks Mattias. Yes they LOVE mutes in Broadway, don't they??? And those are just tough. Every one I've heard sounds awful. Not to mention most of it has saxes doing difficult stuff too. Someone really needs to do a "Broadway Brass and Winds" set! I hope VSL pays attention to these threads, because I'd scrape up the cash to anyone who could do this, and I'm sure a lot of other folks would too.

  • Absolutely.
At the moment Im having to use 'shakes' from source 'a', falls from source 'b' and rips from 'c'.
No single library seems to have got it right yet.
Sounds like a hole in the market to me...hmmm, now what would I do if I was a sample library producer and I saw a hole in the market?... [I]

  • As far as I´m informed Gary Garritan is working on a jazz / big band equivalent of the Personal Orchestra. It won´t be the quality of VSL, of course, but at least something.

This is more like a valley than a hole [:)]

There are a lot of articulations and misc things that we could all use, but the idea of not being able to do anything remotely jazzy or big band out of all the libraries on the market is puzzling....it may something that just can't be done...
