  • MOD Wheel samples

How do the MOD Wheel sampels work? Do they work through a sampler like Halion? Do I need a mod wheel on my keyboard (I have a Yamaha Clavinova and it doesn't have anything like that) Or do I have to have a special software program?

  • If you want to play them live you need a mod wheel on your keyboard, or something you can assign to the mod wheel midi message.
You can still sequence with them though and write mod midi messages on the midi track. You of course need a sequencer like Sonar or Cubase to do that.
It sounds like you might be a beginner at this. Maybe you should visit
www.harmonycentral.com. They have some good pages on MIDI.

  • If you want to do crescendo with VSL(or anyother libraries i think it's the same thing) Brass, forget it, it will sounds very bad, use instead the real crescendo phrases.

  • Thanks for the help guys - I will ask Sonar about writing mod midi messages on the track...and as far as how good it sounds...I'll just have to wait and see if its worth the effort (its just that the pre-recorded crese are only a certain length)

  • I've been asking Sonar about how to use the Vienna Mod Wheel Samples - to be specific on how to write midi mod messages on the track. So far they have been unable to help. Is there something I have to do with the samples or do I just record something and then add the messages? Sonar said I need to know the instrumenet definition or control number???

    I'd appreciate if anyone knows.

    Calaf,
Are you asking how to do MOD messages in SONAR? First, of course you do need to have the instrumetn specified in the sequencer, but that's basic. MOD controls are typically done in the piano roll view, at the bottom of the window, in the "Controller Pane." There are three drop-down menus. The first needs to be set at "Control" and the second needs to be set at "Modulation." The third is the channel of the mod patch. After your settings are right, you can use the pencil tool to "draw" crescendo-diminuendos over time. Ramp up for crescendo, ramp down for dim. You can also use the line tool to draw straight crescendos without mouse-jitter in the MIDI control. I believe CubaseSX has Mod Control envelopes for graduated control, but I don't think SONAR does. I usually us the line tool several times to ramp up or down.
Actually with VSL brass I do get what I think are acceptable results. So experiment with it.

    Chris,

Thanks, but I am not able to select Modulation in the second drop down box after I selet controller in the first box. There is nothing at all in the second drop down box. I really don't know what to do next....? But I can't wait to get this working and experiment with it!!

  • Chris,

I just got something from Sonar...but when I follow the instructions below I can only get as far as import. I find the Mod wheel folder and click ok but nothing happens. There aren't even any samples in the folder it looks like (but I know that can't be true because I can play just fine). Any ideas what is going on?

"To import instrument definitions into Cakewalk, click Options |
Instruments | Define | Import. Use the navigation window to locate the
instrument file and click Open. Next choose one or more instrument
definitions from the Import Instrument Definitions window (in the
Sample Content folder) and click OK. Click Close and you'll be
returned to the Assign Instruments window. You can then assign your
new instruments definition(s) to the proper port and channel
assignments. Do this, and you're done."

    thanks,

Hmmmm . . . Your problem may be Halion. I don't know how that would interface with SONAR using VSL samples. I'm using Gigastudio myself, and having no problem. After all, VSL is designed for Gigastudio.
