  • Techniques for creating a 2nd violin section

SInce only a single violin section is available, I was wondering what if any techniques are used to make your 2nd violins slightly different from the 1sts. Is it just editing midi data differently for each section, or are there other tricks?

  • One common method is as follows:

    1)  Create a 2nd violin section with its own midi track, and position on stage accordingly

Once you have completed the piece:

    2)  Transpose the 2nd violin part up or down 1/2 step (whole step if using SE violins) in your sequencer/notation program.

    3)  Use the mod wheel to either lower or raise the part back to correct concert pitch.

    4)  Notes: taking the above two steps will allow for the 1st and 2nd violin parts to play unison lines without phasing, as each part will be using different samples.  Since the samples of the 2nd violin part will be shifted just a bit in pitch, it will not be quite as "pure" as the 1st violin part.  This is not a bad thing.

  • And another remark, as I did something similar yesterday:

Slightly change the EQ settings for both violins

Add a Solo Violin (reduced volume) to first violins
