  • Good Setup for Film & Game Composition Work

Hi Guys - I have resurrected after a long while of absence. I would like some help please - I am becoming more serious about wanting to be a Film & Game composer. I have 2 more years at university left then i am going to apply to work at EA GAMES since they are based in Guildford which is the same place as my university and the music department has a strong relationship with EA. I have recently got an award grant to invest in some good gear that will allow me to finish my uni course and to start work at EA or wherever i end up at. I would like some input on what hardware and/or software would be a good investment for Film & Game Composing please.

    I have the following gear

    MacBook Pro 17 Core i7 2.6GHZ 8 GB RAM 500GB Universal Audio UAD2 - Solo Laptop
    Apple 24 inch Cinema Display
    Logic Studio (Logic Pro 9)
    NI Komplete 7
    Sibelius 6
    Cubase 6
    Max MSP 5
EWQL Orchestra Platinum, Symphonic Chors, Ministry of Rock, Voices of Passion, Pianos
    Vienna Symphonic Library Special Edition

    This is what my grant quote looks like so far;

    Mac Pro 12 core 2.66GHZ 12 GB RAM 2X 2TB SATA HDD's ATI Radeon HD 5770
Novation SL MK2 Midi Controller with Auto Map
    RME FireFace UFX Audio Interface
Genelec 8040A Active Monitor Speakers - Pair
Ableton Suite 8 - I need this for my Digital Improvisation module im taking next year
Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro 7) - I need this for Applied Music & Video Engineering modules

When you add all of that together - do you think that is enough to compose good quality film & game scores without latency issues & other annoying problems? I basically would like me and my music to be seamless.

If you have any thoughts and suggestions etc please post because i really want to get this right

    Tim

  • I will not go for a FW 400 or USB 2 audio, but for a FW 800 or PCI E audio depending if you want an expandable audio system

If you have money you can had 1 x SSD for the libs another one for streaming the video .....

On your Macpro you will be better with more RAM and with 2 or more monitors

    Best

  • right, get a PCI-e card such as RME Multiface 2 rather than a firewire card. you should check to see that Novation has maps for Cubase 6 if you want to use that controller right away. I bought the earlier generation at the time I got Cubase 5, which was about as old as C6 is now, and there were no maps. and Novation wasn't the most helpful. You can get a lot of *that* control with a keyboard controller, which I don't see in your list; Novation's marketing makes the device seem a lot more essential than it really is IMO.

I would highly recommend VE Pro, that would be a serious omission.
