Am using Vienna Solo Strings (with great success) but want more reverb (for authenticity) than the Sibelius Mixer gives.
If I use Apple's AUMatrixReverb via Vienna Ensemble > Effects Add, I lose panning altogether.
Anyone know of an alternative, please?

Hello! I can only suggest that you try Vienna Ensemble with Sibelius. That's what I'm doing these days. Actually, I'm using VE Pro. If you use VE Server with Sibelius, you'll have a nice mixer, and you can load your Reverb into a Bus channel right in VE. There is a good 'how to' in your user area for working with VE and Sibelius. I don't know what Reverb you want to use, but just be aware that you'll need the 64bit version if you're using 64 bit VE. Otherwise, you can run the 32 bit version of VE to load a 32 bit Reverb.

Hello Dennis, Thanks. Yes, I'm getting a great deal of success from Vienna Ensemble (latest version) with Sibelius; works very well - does so much so well. I don't have VE Pro. But am going to the Master Bus in VE as my Sibelius Playback Device, and Adding the Apple AUMatrixReverb there. It works extremely well - as a reverb. Several convincing wet and dry environments. Great Just that, once you've set one, all the panning settings (e.g. violins on the left, cellos on the right) no longer work. You can set them, but Playback in Sibelius fails to reproduce them. If anyone a) knows a workaround and/or b) can suggest a good, robust and reliable (free!) reverb plugin that works with VE and Sibelius, I'd be grateful. (I've been looking at Ambience, which seems to get good reviews.)

Hi. Panning should work just fine. I just tried the reverb you're using, and I was able to have the panning work fine. Have you downloaded Optimizing VSL in Sibelius? It's in the USER AREA, in NEEDFUL THINGS, then SIBELIUS.

Dennis, Yes; I got the pdf and worked my way through it carefully… couldn't see a reference to reverb or panning, though. When I select AUMatrixReverb, the reverb is remarkable: each ambience is clear and effective. But all four instruments of my string quartet (using Solo Strings) come from the same left-right position.

Hello Mark! Please notice that our Vienna Instruments and Vienna Ensemble ignore MIDI panorama messages (like sent by Sibelius), as this is only one-dimensional. With the power panner you have in VE, you can not only set the position, but also the width of the instrument. Please use the VE power panner. Best regards, Andi

Andi, Thanks. In fact I am setting pan in VE. It was not working… all (in this case four) instruments originate from across the field. Do I need to disable, clear or 'unset' pan in Sibelius? If so, how?

Hi Mark! MIDI pan values are simply ignored. No need to disable them. I guess your problem comes from your reverb plugin then. Best, Andi

Hi, Andi! In Sibelius (6.2 on 10.6.8) I haven't changed Pan or Chorus settings in my Mixer. Vienna Ensemble (not Pro)'s panning works perfectly - until I go to Send + and add Apple's AUmatrixReverb. Then I get wonderful reverb but no panning… by that I mean all four instruments' sounds are spread equally across the space between Left and Right speakers. Even setting, say, the 1st violin to 10 degrees in angle at extreme left doesn't stop it from filling the entire space! Does VE not work with Apple's MatrixReverb, perhaps?

Hi Mark! I just tried to recreate your problem and loaded AUmatrixReverb with VE. Power Pan still worked for me. Best, Andi

Andi, Thanks. Although I can change the sliders and/or handles for each of the channels in Solo Strings, they have no effect as soon as I've added AUmatrixReverb to each. I tried adding AUmatrixReverb to Master. Same thing. Should I be sending via another Bus, or similar? I did come across this thread.

Success, Andi! On restarting VE + Sibelius 6 etc, I now have both reverb and pan. Thanks! But since there's no documentation for AUMatrixReverb, which reverb plugin (ideally free) would you recommend for:
- Vienna Ensemble (not Pro)
- Sibelius 6
- Mac OS 10.6
It must be stable, well documented and properly supported - and really work well in this environment. Thanks Dennis too!

Hi Mark! I recommend the Convolution reverb and the Hybrid reverb contained in the Vienna Suite. You can find more info and download a trial version here: http://www.vsl.co.at/en/211/497/1686/454/1673/115.htm Best, Andi
