    Hi all

    I'm looking to pick up (buy) a package or two of the Vienna libraries. I was wondering if any of the bundles come with midi files of real scores that I can use for learning. Maybe there is a third party company selling instructional material. I cant read music hich is why samples would help me.

    That would be great and there may be some. The issue is that there are many different libraries available and it would be hard to match the libraries used by the creator to yours. For example, I have Special Edition and Special Edition Plus, so the ideal files for me would be ones that use those specific samples. I suppose someone would also have to share the preset or matrix created for the MIDI file, or else the key switches and controllers wouldn't work. I recommend Special Edition and Special Edition Plus if you are looking for an overal orchestral collection. This has most of the orchestra (string, wind, percussion), lots of orch string articulations and good solo string articulations. (The Appassionata articulations sound good but limited. If I were doing film scores, I would add the full Appassionata library.) Are you using this as a stand-alone program, or with a DAW (e.g., Sonar, Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic)?

    Actually it's those two bundles that I was viewing the video demo's. I was hoping the midi file was included as it would be a great learning tool for me. I will also purchase the new dimensions bundle.

    I have Pro Tools as my main DAW but will adapt to the most efficient workflo.

    That's a great start. Any other recomendations? DVD's,   books or sites? I will start to google in hopes of finding a site geared towards beginners.

    Mike, I may not be much help, but send me email at bhartmann@charter.net if you like and I will share what little knowledge I have. I do think the Spec Ed and Spec Ed+ is a good package. For example, although I don't remember the exact price I paid, I know it was in the same general range as Hollywood strings, but with VSL you also get solo strings, chamber strings, wind instruments, percussion, and a few bonus things along with the orchestral strings. (I know Hollywood is optimized for film score-type strings and it's a different package--just using it to make a point about the VSL price.)

    To the original poster: Quite a few pieces published on our Demo sub-site come with downloadable tutorials, including most (if not all) files that were created for their realisation.

    Some examples:

    -> Adventures On Earth

    -> Daphnis & Chloe

    -> Battle Of The Heroes

    ... and there are many, many more.

    I just placed an order for:

    Ensemble Pro

    Suite

    A few keys (dongles)

    Instruments Pro

    Dimensions Brass and the

    Special Editions Bundle.

    If you listen closely you can still hear the Amex weeping.

    All this should keep me busy for a while.

    If we asked Jay nicely could we get the Star Wars demo as a midi file? I realize the ultimate file would be based on your setup, but it would be a great learning tool...

    If you go to the Demo Zone on this site, just look for the demos for your desired package and play the demos. A Pop-Up window with a player inside will open and you can download the mp3-file from this window. On SOME of this demos you additionally can load tutorial files, which mostly are midi files and presets for the VI-Player. Unfortunately you only see if there's a tutorial or not when the player window has opened, so you will have to click through the demos - one after another.

    I was pretty excited when pointed to all those demo files. I mean I still am excited and looking foward to listening to the music. I did pop open about a dozen or more to see if they had any associated tut files. Most did not. There was a few but not with my DAW. I've never imported a midi file into anything. I can't imagine it wuld be pretty. For a beginner like myself, It would be a no-brainer for me to pay for tutorial files.

    Come on Jay or anyone else. I got 20 bucks for any demo with tutorial files.

    Standard MIDI-files are more or less the least common denominator of all sequencers and notation programs. The format exists since about 25 years now, and it should be understood by all professional (and semi-professional) applications. Just give it a try. There will be some manual work involved (like assigning MIDI ports and channels), but there's no rocket science involved. šŸ˜‰

    There is lots of knowledge available all over the web, like here, for example.

    I'd pay $100 for Star Wars MIDI in Cubase, even if for copyright reasons it means I have to buy a score, for another $10

    Although I'm sure I can figure it out myself before I'm 100.
