  • HELP! Vienna Key suddenly NOT showing up [solved]

Oh my God this could not have s come with worse timing!

Something is wrong with my Vienna Key! Now, i just upgraded to the latest version of  eLicenser tonight, and when i tried to start my VE PRO, i got the following messages:

"Application Vienna Instrument (M6) has caused the following error:

    No eLicenser connected"

    and the follow-up:
"Application 'Unknown Application' has caused the following error:
    Application not registered."

Now, i have tried it in every single USB slot on my computer. And it simply wont work! When i plug in the Vienna Key, the red light IS active, so SOMETHING is getting through to it. And it has not incurred any damage or anything... Been sitting in the same slot for weeks. No Change. I am no0t sure if the Vienna Key itself has been damaged (mysteriously) or if there is some bizarre  corrupt preference or file that is getting in the way. But PLEASE  please please VSL.. tell me what to do here! I've tried everything. I have thousands of dollars on this key.

Give me any troubleshooting tips i can attempt, and if none of those work, please let me know what i can to about transferring all my licenses to a new key (worst case scenario)

    THanks in advance.

  • Some information about your system would help. However, as an emergency measure, why don;'t you uninstall the eLicenser and re-install the version that worked for you.

  • Okay now i am starting to think the key is dead or something.

By the way MacPro  2.8 Quad-core (most recent version.)

    OSX 10.6.6

I went into Apple System Profiler, then under USB to see all connected devices. Everything shows up except the Vienna Key. I then took my old Apple XS-Key dongle and plugged it in to that same slot into which i had inserted the Vienna Key, and the Apple XS-Key DOES show up. So i know it isnt that particular physical USB slot (and i tried this on all of the USB slots: same result.)

I guess my initial thought about it being the eLicenser upgrade was incorrect. Must have been just a coincidence that the key "died" at the same time.

Anyhow, like i mentioned earlier, the red light on the Vienna Key still does come on. So i would assume that means that the actual "plug" part is working, in that it is at least connecting properly enough to transfer power from the slot to the V Key itself. But it's just not showing up. There has been no damage to the key; it didnt get hit or anything. It seems as the data on the key that tells my computer "This is a USB key of some sort" is no longer connecting.

Any idea what may be going on here?

    thanks in advance.

  • I think you'll have to wait for an OSX user to help you, because on Windows the eLicenser is not "seen" as a USB device, unlike iLok, for example.

I still think that your best bet is to install the older version, just to rule out the software aspect.

  • Wow. You're a genius, DG.

So, that did the trick. Although i find it odd... the most current version of eLC is 6.3.1066.  I had to go back to version 6.0.2.703.

Hmmm. Weird. Oh well, guess this can serve as a warning to other Mac OSX users... be careful about updating your eLicenser.

    Thanks a ton, DG!

  • Glad it's all working now. Just a thought though; you did repair permissions after installing the update didn't you?
