  • Fixing Western Digital Hard Drives to Work with Vienna Instruments

I've had a very frustrating time tracking down a note-drop problem with samplers like Kontakt and Vienna Instruments. After finally solving the problem, I wanted to share my results in hopes that it'll help someone else avoid all the trouble I went through.

In a nutshell: modern Western Digital hard drives, even fast drives like Caviar Blacks, go to sleep after only eight seconds of inactivity. It takes them about 500 milliseconds to wake back up, but VI's buffer is only 400 milliseconds long. This wreaks havoc on sample playback reliability in "online" mode, when the sampler is operating at real-time speeds. When you render to disk in "offline" mode, you won't notice it, because VI waits for the disk to spin up if necessary.

Here's more detail about how to identify and solve the problem. If you have a Western Digital hard drive, I hope this helps you:

  • Very interesting info.

    Thanks for posting this........

I received feedback from VSL user Talino, who successfully modified this technique to work on a Mac. I've added it to my post.

    Thanks, Talino!
