  • Star Trek Voyager and Stagate Atlantis

Would anyone with VSL be willing to submit a Demo of the Intros to these Sci Fi TV series. I have seen people try to Demo these on their synthesizers on You Tube and they are very good but I would like to hear VSL. Especially the French Horn parts in Voyager!! I don't have the collection as of yet and would like to hear specifically these audio demos before I decide. There are many good reasons for me to use these two as a guide for me to decide. I may start out with the special editions Bundle and whatever else I would need to get the rest of the articulations unlocked in that DVD set. It would also be nice if the Demos could be prepared using these DVDs solely if that is possible? Thanks for at least reading my post and thinking of a possible audio demo?

  • I'd rather hear a demo for a major sci-fi theme, like Star Trek. Something that isn't John Williams basically. I love the Star Wars demo's but I'd want another major theme demo'd to show versatility. I'd actually like to see more film-related demo's in general. Too many people doubt VSL's versatility in film music, which simply isn't true.

Off-topic side note: No offense to Joel Goldsmith but I hated the theme to Atlantis. I didn't really like the show either. SG-1 was great, SG-U was a whole new concept with great potential and shouldn't have died... but SG-A? Bad show, bad music. That's my take anyway.

  • I just would really like to hear a demo to both of these intro themes. I don't really care to much on Joel's work either but very interested in hearing how close VSL can get to those particular demos. Before I dish out for VSL I am sticking with EW until I hear something more impressive. Fanfare and the star wars demos are very good but not exactly what I want to hear as far as the Dynamics in the String and Horn sections from the intro demos I have mentioned

I notice that you haven't mentioned the fee. [;)]

  • Paid $1K for EW Hollywood Strings and Brass Diamond Bundle from GC. I can get VSL SE Bundle FULL for $1650. Now does that make any sense to you? $600 and some change more than the EW bundle? I got the EW Diamond Composer Bundle for less than 1K couple years ago on a Teradrive. Getting a Teradrive revision 2 in a bit. That set me back $89.00 I was told you can do kinda the same with VSL purchase a hard drive for around $400 which will contain all the Vienna Libraries except some of the downloadable and purchase keys as needed. That would be close to $15-20k when done!! I do have the entire vienna (VSL) back when it was made for Giga. But the new VSL only works on Vienna player and was either re-recorded up converted to 24bit? I think you can convert 24 to 16 bit but not the other way correct? Is there really that much difference in the 16bit Giga version versus the 24 bit VSL player version? I know there are all new libraries like Appassionata Strings Bundle etc which may be the equivalent EW HS or not?

  • do you love star trek voyager?it's my favourite shows!

  • I understand your frustrations with libraries being expensive. It's taken me a long time to work up to my current VSL collection and I still have a considerable wishlist. Like you, I began with the Giga library (first edition). It's my understanding that the library was always sampled at 24bit but dithered down to 16 bits for the early editions. The Vienna Instrument libraries are reprogrammed from the original 24-bit samples plus additional sample sessions. (Please correct me if I'm wrong - I couldn't verify this info on the site).

I still have other libraries but VSL is my go-to. The consistency of sample quality and programming from one instrument to another is brilliant. And with VI there is so much opportunity to customize your workflow. I am also completely sold on the concept of samples with minimal ambience and without pre-programmed panning. Create your dream ensemble and place them how you prefer. Use a convolution reverb to put them in your favorite room (even the Great Pyramid, thanks to Altiverb!) There isn't another library I've used which has this degree of flexibility.

I'm sure we each have a list of a million arrangements we'd like to hear before making this kind of investment. In fairness, I don't think anyone has more examples in more varied styles than VSL does on this website. And while other libraries may be able to nail a very specific sound well, I sincerely believe no other libraries are as adaptable, customizable or extensively detailed as VSL's.

That said... I also find that there is no sustitute for the time you spend on detailed programming and mixing when it comes to quality results. VSL isn't the fast food of sample libraries and if speed is paramount, perhaps this isn't the place to invest.

Hopefully I've said something of use, as I do feel a bit rambly this evening. [8-)]
